arista premium 400

hello! Sorry, I have another question. Has anyone here ever shot Arista premium film? I read on another board that it may be tri-x repackaged. Is there any truth to this? Let me know what you think, thanks!

Yes, it's Tri-X for sure. I use it all the time.

That's cool. I hadn't heard that. I saw on the Freestyle website that it is also offered in speeds other than 400...what Kodak film would those be? I just picked up a roll of the Arista .edu film to play with. The guy at the shop claimed that it had the look of older films.

Seriously, shoot a few rolls--it's Tri-X. Same dev times, same grain, same contrast, made in USA, which means Kodak. It's possible that they're using a different base, but the emulsion is the same, or indistinguishable anyway. And evidently the new LegacyPro 400 they are offering is Neopan 400. I actually started a letter-writing campaign to get them to rebrand Neopan 1600, my other favorite film.

If it's thinner, it may wrinkle or curl. That's something Tri-X doesn't do.
OTOH for many, Tri-X negatives often come out purple instead of clear.

I'd be interested to hear how Arista Premium compares on these counts...

yeah its rebranded tri-x. very cheap for what it is too. good stuff, i find it very flexible in terms of pushing.

the reason tri-x and tmax negs come out more purple than clear, is because kodaks anti halation layer is a little more impervious to fixer and clearing agent. i suggest fixing and clearing about 15% longer than you usually do. i often have to refix my tmax to get it to clear up enough for decent scanning.
