MZ-3 Built-in Flash Problem

Hi, just have a strange problem with the built-in flash of my MZ-3. It refused to fire when the cam is powered by the 2 units of CR-2 batts but have no problem firing if using with an external battery pack. The CR-2 batteries are fresh units. Has anyone has any experience of this nature and what could be the cause of the flash not firing while the cam is powered by CR-2 batteries?

I have an MZ-3 on the way from KEH. It should be at home when I get there. Not too many have them since they were only marketed in a few places for a short time. The ZX-5n/MX-5n is the closest model to it, but there are some differences. They do take the same battery pack.

I'm wondering if the CR-2
batteries are good enough to run the electronics but not the flash.
