Honeywell 5 page ad (1976) - Spotties and K cameras

This is a rare and unique ad - 5 pages, when normally Honeywell/Pentax went for 2 pages max. Also, this has to be the last hurrah for Honeywell, as the new K cameras are introduced as Asahi Pentax rather than Honeywell... I haven't seen another ad that shows both the Spotmatic screwmounts and the new K mount cameras on the same page. Found behind the front page of the February 1976 Modern Photography magazine.

Honeywell Pentax SP1000
Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic F
Asahi Pentax KM
Honeywell Pentax ESII
Asahi Pentax K2
Asahi Pentax KX

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw this ad. Notice the f/1.2 K lens on the K2 also...

The SP-F is billed as the worlds most popular - I think true at the time. Pentax was in their prime here.

Olympus with the OM was about to upset the apple cart - I don't think Pentax ever fully recovered from the OM. In hidnsight, it also seems to me that Nikon and the other 'system' camera makers ('system' meant interchangeable prisms, focusing screens, and motor drives) instead of attacking OM head on, went after Pentax (and Konica) in the advanced amateur segment. That is, a lot of 'mid size' cameras with semi pro features. Pentax tried to go after OM with the M series...

I believe the K2 was always advertised with the 1.2

I believe they were about to lose that spot to the Canon AE-1, actually, but it's true, I think.

Thanks for posting Nesster.

It's nice to see some advertising for the old Pentax K2. Aside from a few of us reading in this forum the K2 doesn't get a lot of love. This has always surprised me. It was the top-of-the line model and quite expensive back in the day (1976). It wasn't in production very long and this may have something to do with it as well. One only has to run a roll of film through a K2 to really appreciate it. Mine is still going strong. As much as I liked the MX I prefer the extra size, weight and features of the K2. I know Pentax was just following the miniaturization trend when they started making their cameras smaller at this time. I think it was a mistake. They seem to be following the same design strategy with the new K7. It is much smaller and lighter than my K10 and just feels and looks cheaper than the K10. This is all subjective of course but I prefer the extra weight of the larger cameras.

It is indeed a very nice camera, but if you have owned one you will know why.
The film speed setting ring is fiddly at best and prone to failure, often requiring service.

Yep I agree, I love using my K2 but the ASA ring is painful at best. If the K2 had the regular ASA dial like on a KX, then it would be almost perfect.

There were not many ads showing screw-mounts and K-mounts on the same page.
Nice to see.

I bought my SP1000 the year before that ad was produced.
