A Blast From The Past

I was cleaning out some files today and came across the original mail order receipt from November 1982 for my original XR7 and lenses.
  • Ricoh XR-7 camera w/ 50mm 1.7 $209.95
  • Tamron 28mm 2.5 $79.95
  • Tamron 70-150 3.5 $159.95
  • Tamron SP 2x Converter $56.95
  • Tamron screw pentax mount $16.95
  • Tamron Pentax K mount $16.95
Shipping was $8.00

There was a small note at the bottom:

"Sorry we ran out of the Ricoh 1.7 lens so we are sending you the Pentax 1.7 for the same price, I hope this is acceptable. Thanks please call if there is a problem. Kelly"

Nope, no problem at all Kelly.

I still have the Pentax-M 50/1.7 and am still glad that they ran out of the XR Rikenon 50/1.7!

Yes!

That was a lot of money at the time, but we had a small windfall that covered the cost of the camera stuff as well as a few other things.

The lens swap was certainly a bonus - Gotta love those Ricoh bodies though!

Yes, I am really fond of the XR7. That body served me very well up until I mounted a defective Zenitar fisheye in spring of 2008. The result was non-repairable damage to the shutter/aperture interlock. I found a replacement on eBay for about $20 with two zooms. I traded the zooms for a CLA and that is my current XR7 body. I have two other K-mount film bodies (Ricoh XR-2s and Pentax KX), but still prefer the XR7.

I tried to scan it, but the print is quite faded and it did not scan well.

I'll have to dig out my dad's accessory order form from 1977. That includes the Vivitar 28/2.5 I'm using along with a ton of Vivitar filters.

I also have a CLA from an ME Super I bought locally (then sold). $90 for a shutter in 1991!

I don't know the actual price points. Nesster might have an old ad or magazine listing. The Pentax would have been more money, though I doubt if it was more that $25-$30 difference.

Edit: In 1984, Adorama:
  • Nikon 50/1.8 AI $76.95
  • SMC Pentax-M 50/1.7 $49.95
  • Minolta 50/1.7 $39.95
  • Rikenon 50/1.7 "Call for Prices"
I would expect that the Rikenon would have been near the Minolta. (Thanks Nesster for posting your ads on Flickr...)

So it is! I was really surprised browsing the Nesster's ad sheets just how comparable today's used prices are to the prices new 30 years ago.

I have a Honeywell brochure from 1972 with prices in it...I wonder if anyone has scanned it...it's 4" wide and 8.5" tall. The background is chunks of wood.

A 300/4 S-M-C Tak and 400/5.6 S-M-C were the same price (strangely) at $399.50. Most expensive product was the 300mm Ultra-Achromatic f/5.6 at $1450 Or $6328.59 in 2008 dollars.

Edit: WOW...the extension tubes I'm going to sell are in here too...$24.50...I was going to ask $25

Hi Steve,

I can buy a Ricoh XR-7 with a Rikenon 50mm f2.0 and a Tokina RMC 35-135mm f4-4.5, all in mint condition.

Do you think it is worth USD 70,= for the set? I'm actually after the Tokina but the rest comes with it...

I'd say probably so. The body is worth about the same as a similar condition ME Super. There are multiple variants of the Rikenon 50/2.0 with the all metal XR Rikenon having a justified cult reputation for sharpness. The mostly plastic Rikenon P variant performs similarly to the XR, though without the cult following. Other variants are unremarkable.
