recent acquisition [pics + question]

So, I had a posted a request on my local Freecycle.org group for any old pentax slr and got a response from a woman who said she had an old Spotmatic that hasn't seen the light of day for years and said I could have it.

Turns out, there was also a Super-Takumar 24mm f/3.5 (with original metal lens hood), Solignor 135mm 3.5, and a Tamron 85-210mm f/4.5 (completely covered in fungus).

now, the question I have is regarding the Tamron lens. There appears to be an adapter attached to the end of it. Is this the "adaptall" adapter I've been hearing about on these forums and if so does that mean I can find some old cheap Tamron lenses with this adapter? Any caveats I should be aware of? Thanks!

Yes, that's an ES Adaptall-2. This makes any Tamron Adaptall-2 lens act like a SMC Takumar - you get open aperture metering with a SPF or ESII for example. Your SP won't take advantage of this, but the adapter will work there too.

And wow, congrats on the 24mm!

The ES adaptall works great by the way -

of course it is admired by us screw-heads... Someday when I find myself the owner of a good Fujica, the Fuji adaptall I have will be nice as well.

I went so far as to buy a Nikon FE just to get a good priced 24mm lens. Of course, if I add up the camera and the two-three lenses I had to buy for it, I could have just gone and bought the 24 Tak. But the other lens I got the Nikon for is the 35/2... so going all tak for 24 + fast 35, I still come out ahead going Nikon.

My SP look pretty nice, but it doesn't look this good! *envious*

To tell you the truth, I've got two SP's and my other one looks better than this one. The other one has a damn near flawless leather case as well. i almost wonder if the thing was ever used!

Wow, I didn't know the 24mm was that in demand. I have a SMC Pentax-M 24mm. I guess I'll have to give it more TLC.

Don't listen to Nesster about the ES Adaptall adapter. It is a veritable paper weight. However, being the nice guy am, I'll take it off your hands for a few bucks and shipping.

Congrats on that body and the 24mm. With a 50 or 55mm, you'll be set. Well, except for a 105mm and maybe a 135mm and and 85mm to round it out. (j/k about the latter 2.)

Edit: I repeat, I was just joking.

well, i've got a 55mm f/1.8 on it's way and already have an SMC Takumar 135mm f/2.5. I've also got a super-takumar 150mm f/4 annnnnnnd let's not forget the mint super-tak 200mm f/4.

i don't know...i'd say i'm off to a good start! You happen to find an extra 85mm and i'll send you the adapter.

They can be OK. If I'm looking at the right listing, that one may be somewhat harshed-on, but does still have the hood. They were really actually fairly nice back in their day, if a bit chunky by modern standards: it sounds like a lot of them didn't necessarily survive, (They do tend to suck in all kinds of dust and stuff, it seems: look closely at the pictures around the zoom ring) so it may take a few tries to get a good one.

I think that lens may be the only Kiron that ever came in a KA-mount version, though, so the factory hood alone might be worth the price of admission if it turns out the lens itself is no good.

I went even further and bought a D700. Now I have an Ai'd Nikkor-N.C. 24/2.8 among other primes. The Nikkor 24mm lenses are indeed much cheaper than the Pentax ones. I guess the fact that there's no new 24mm lenses available from Pentax makes the old ones even more desireable. Widest I have for my Pentax 35mm bodies are my 28mm lenses and I'd like to go wider. Might be easier to acquire a Nikon film body though.

This makes any Tamron Adaptall-2 lens act like a SMC Takumar - you get open aperture metering with a SPF or ESII for example.
