Just arrived... K1000 and M50 F1.7

As I was searching for a autofocus film SLR, I ran across a K1000 that caught my attention. I bid a little more than I wanted to, but it looked very clean - hardly any marks at all and the seller was including a M50 F1.7 that had a 'slight discoloration' on one of the edges.

Well, it arrived today. The K1000 is next to perfect as advertised. Body is very clean, shutter speeds seem accurate, meter is very close to dead on. Overall, I am happy. However, that discoloration on the M50 is actually fungus. Not what I was expecting.

So, I paid $65 with shipping. I was figuring the K1000 was worth about $30-40 and the M50 about $25. Now, the M50 is near worthless in its current state. The seller has a return period - I'd be out the return shipping. Is it worth keeping it even though the lens is not as advertised?

Thanks,

Joe

From experience, sellers sometimes will consent to a "partial refund", usually the portion you feel you're due minus return shipping. That way, they keep some money, you keep your merch, and the don't have to figure out what the hell to do with a fungusy lens.

So for example, if you feel the lens was $25 of what you paid for the camera, and it'd be $10 to return it, ask him if he'd refund you $15 and let you keep it. Just be certain to assure him that it really is somewhat damaged, including the offer to really return the lens if necessary. Most eBay sellers will take the partial refund approach to keep customers happy and avoid complicated returns, and to also avoid sitting on unsaleable equipment.

Eric Hendrickson may be able to do something for your lens, though I don't know if it's going to cost more than it's worth.

Your line of thinking is how I usually think when dealing on eBay. However, the seller and I already had an issue/disagreement with shipping charges and I am not positive he'd be willing to agree to a partial refund at this point.

I considered having Eric give it CLA - it may or may not be worth the $ though.

Or you could clean the lens yourself. It's really not that hard.

Assuming the fungus has not etched into the coatings/glass....how would one go about cleaning it?

Use a rubber sink stopper to turn and remove the lens name plate. Then you can use small needlenose pliers, or dividers to take out the lens retaining ring. Clean glass and reverse to reassemble.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to try a 'killing it' with sunlight, then perhaps taking it apart and cleaning the element. The body is clean and appears to be working 100%, so if I can take care of this on my own, I am OK with the overall purchase price.

why did you purchase a K1000 if you were looking for an AF SLR?

Who knows? first impressions are very high. I like the simplicity. I'd prefer an LX, but there are a lot of things I want. I'm still on the lookout for a ZX-5n...

Joe congratulations. Keep us posted on the cleaning results of the lens. Some people also use distilled white vinegar to kill the fungus.
