Originally posted by Blue Gene, as a followup on this, one other thing I want to point out is that during projection you can focus the image and perhaps control the brightness. Some scanner holders may actually hold the slide just a small increment above or below the platen etc. which can effect the appearance of the image not being in focus. This is a way to verify that. There are aftermarket carriers that can be fine adjusted should this be the case.
I use a Coolscan 9000, so there is no platten. There are manual focus and analog brightness adjustments. The auto exposure does just fine on most films, including Kodacrhome 25 and perfectly exposed K64. K64 is a real bear if the slide is even a little bit underexposed. I probably need to spend a bit more time with the analog gain and some of the pp features.
