Asahiflex IIb (late)

Late Asahiflex IIB : Note the plug over the hole where the low shutter dial would go for the IIA. The early IIB did not have an empty hole. It just lacked dial.

Here's some pics of the early-model S1a (currently for sale and probably going on eBay in the next few days):

As before, feel free to use them as you like but don't expect them to be on Photobucket forever - save them to your own server asap please.

Not had a look to see if the SP500's still there but I'll check later in the week and post some pictures if it is.

I don't know if you want to make use of this table, but it may be something we could set up with Serial # ranges. I have it in Word docx.

Early/Late refers to ‘type’ or revision to the model. The S2 late version had a slot added to the shutter speed dial to accommodate the clip on meter. The SV ‘late type’ had the mirror box modified to accept the Super Tak 50mm f1.4 lens to prevent the mirror from hitting the element, and the door latch was also changed. The SV revisions also apply to the S1a.
The AP, S and K were marketed by Sears and Roebuck on under their Tower brand. The AP and S were called the Tower 26 and the K was called the Tower 29. Following the release of the S3, marketing in the U.S. was handled by the Heiland Division of the Honeywell Corporation which resulted in different branding model numbers in the U.S.A.
S2 = H2 and they may have Heiland and or Honeywell on the prism housing rather than Asahi. There are also H2 with Asahi on the Prism and H2 by the Serial #.
S1 = H1
S3 = H3
SV = H3v
S1a = H1a

Thanks Blue. I'll see if Adam can think of if/how they might be able to drop that into the camera section.

I'll get the pics above to Adam this weekend. Are people able to help gather some of the information for the tables?

Thx
Steve

Sorry, the day after I took those S1a photos it took off for its new home so I can't measure it.

I did dig out the SP500 yesterday though, so I'll take some photos of that in the next couple of days.

PS. Flash sync on the S1a is a seperate position between 1/60 and 1/30. I never had the manual but I believe I read somewhere that it was 1/50?

Notable information about the ES:
The Pentax ES was the world's first 35mm SLR with a fully electronic shutter system. When set on automatic, the ES has a stepless shutter. The Pentax memory device computes and delivers an infinite number of exposures between 8 and 1/1000 second - automatically. If 1/555 second will give you the right exposure, that is what will be programmed. The Pentax ES utilizes the last generation screw-mount Super-Multi-Coated Takumar and SMC lenses. In addition to the legendary flare control and color fidelity that has made these lenses so popular, the S-M-C/ SMC lenses are designed to allow open aperture metering on the ES, ES II and Spotmatic F. The viewfinder remains bright under all conditions, making focusing easy. In the event that earlier lenses without the open-aperture metering coupling, the ES provides stop-down metering with the familiar switch near the lens mount. In any case, the meter is activated by partially depressing the shutter release button. These features make the ES less than one-quarter inch taller and only six ounces heavier than the Spotmatic F. The standard color for the ES was black, which was a departure for previous Pentax m42 bodies where black was a special order. With both the ES and ES II, chrome was the special order version. The ES name on the face of the body replaced Electro Spotmatic on the earlier model released only in Japan and had improved circuitry. The size of the circuits did not allow room for a self timer in the ES.

Price when New
7186 - camera with 50mm f/1.4 $360
7187 - camera with 55mm f/1.8 $320
7188 - camera body only $290

The S1a specs should be the same as the SV except for the 1/1000 not being market and it lacks the timer. That would make it slightly lighter but the dimensions would be the same.

Notes about the Pentax SL:
The SL was essentially a meter-less version of the Spotmatic. It lacked the behind the lens ttl meter. It was pitched by Asahi Optical to replace the legendary SV. Ironically, it had the slot on the shutter speed dial to allow it to accept clip on meters like those on th
