What you had sounds an awful lot like a KM to me too.

K1000
KM

As you can see the only significant differences are the presence of the DOF button and the timer (other than the K1000 or KM name anyway).

I recently "refound" my old KM and hope to be running a roll or 2 through it over the holidays.

i will check, but i believe there are like 3 K1000's at the downtown Henry's Outlet here in Toronto with the DOF preview lever

they are priced like they are made of gold but thats a different story...

This is getting silly now!

AFAIK no K1000 ever left a Pentax factory with DOF preview or self-timer.
These features are the defining differences between models KM and K1000.

Since the K1000 was based on the KM it stands to reason that the top covers are interchangeable.
With such a long production run there are probably lots more K1000 top covers in the pipeline.
No doubt some KM bodies with damaged top covers got K1000 spares when repaired.

What a few of you may have seen (or owned) is probably some sort of "Frankencamera"...

Chris

Treasures...Oh yeah.

My first own camera was the KM and it came with the SMC 55/1.8 I got it for one of my very first sallorys back in 1975, the same year they were realeased. I loved that camera and I still do, although it´s gone since a few yars back. I really miss it. I had it for 30 years.

I´ve had a few Pentax bodies along with it, but the KM is, and will always be, THE camera. I think I need to get another one...

I have a nice black MX now and it´s a gem, but I´m a KM man at heart.

Edit: What about the value of these KM beauties nowadays?
