I wanted to make sure I got at least one camera into Eric's hands before he decides (if ever) to retire. I sent him a thrift store MX that needed seals and the mirror wouldn't return on anything slower than 1/125. The body was is great shape though. I paid him on the 19th so I'm anxiously checking my email everyday for a completed CLA notice!!!

Eric usually just ships the camera back without sending an email alert, so you may get it sooner than you think. Give him a few weeks to do the CLA, as I'm sure he is pretty busy.

Thanks for the heads up. I went on a thrift store shopping spree ( black om2n, fujica v2, minolta v2 ) so I have plenty to keep me busy until is gets here. You people need to stop sending him 3 or 4 items at a time so I can get my ONE camera back sooner!

I just got my Honeywell Repronar back from him the other day. The trailing shutter wasn't responsive and the lens had some dried cleaning stuff in it. Both issues are fixed and I'm looking forward to using it in the next few weeks for ultra maros as part of my photo class final project. This marks the 14th or so camera he's repaired for me, and all of them have come back in much better shape. I actually recommended him to a kid in class who's K1000 isn't working.

As soon as I get my LX back (still waiting) I'm going to send my MX in for some Eric H love. Have both of those bodies in fighting trim will be awesome!

LX + MX is my favourite combination. I often take those two when travelling, the LX with colour (usually Ektar) and the MX with BW.

Just got my MX back. Feels great. And wow that viewfinder is glorious. I think I'll toss a roll in it right away!!!

Just one thing is making me scratch my head though. Upon mirror return there is a very, very...very loud *PING*. I don't know if it is part of the mirror mechanism or the shutter. It is really loud. I don't remember hearing it before I sent it out. Is this common on an MX?

Edit - Eric emailed me back. He said it's just the way it is and he gets complaints all the time. Such a shame. Looks like I'm going to put the MX up for sale. My OM and XD have much smoother shutters.

I have two MX's and I have not noticed a "ping" in either. Perhaps you have a dog's hearing range . . .
Here are my none optimal none laboratory audio/video captures of these that may be a reasonable point of comparison.
Pentax MX - http://www.fototime.com/145C275F5DD9ECC/orig.mp4
Olympus OM1 - http://www.fototime.com/2E1C74AE9DA1F0B/orig.mp4
Minolta XD11 - http://www.fototime.com/0AB6086FFDEA621/orig.mp4

I have wanted to conduct such a test for awhile now but have not set the time aside to even consider how to do it so I would be interested to hear from others.

Wow. That sounds soooo good. Nothing like mine.

The volume of the ping is very low in this video. I guess you have to take my word for it. It's loud. My girlfriend said it would get really annoying if we go shooting together.

This is me trying to get closer so you can actually here the ping. But even this video fails to replicate real life. I don't think my phone captures the frequency very well.

Bulb. The ping comes after the mirror returns.

The ping is easy to hear in both of your videos but I don't hear it on either of my two MX's.

Ok so I'm not crazy. Good. I tapped around with my fingernail and found that it might be coming from the thin metal baffles in the light path. They resonate when I tap them. I wonder how difficult it would be to add some felt to the backside of the baffles to dampen the vibrations.

I emailed Eric to see if I could send it back to him and we could brainstorm a solution. I really want to like this camera.

BTW, I tested mine at sync speed and you at 1/1000. Is the ping present at sync speed too?

All speeds.

Eric got back to me and said he'd quiet it down.

Works great!
I'm French, I do not speak English very well, and I do not find translation for "CLA'ed". I have read so about one old camera "it has been CLA'd". I think it means something about repair?
