My SRT201 doesn't ping at all. Plus I keep spending money on OMs and fixed lens rangefinders.
My other good working SRT-101 doesn't have as loud a ping as the one I posted.

BTW, since you expressed an interest in the OM4, I have an OM4Ti and I find it's metering system to be the standard among what I have but it's shutter advance is not as smooth as the OM1&2 and it's viewfinder magnification is down to 0.84X from 0.97X.

That might be the problem. Hearing loss is often fairly selective and may not involve the full frequency range. The result is an exaggeration of those sounds that you do hear well.

Both of my SRTs (101 and 102) have very smooth/quiet shutters when compared with my Pentaxes.

I have a double-pinging MX here -- once when I wind the shutter (D#6 for you musicians out there) and once when the shutter is released (F#5). They make quite a nice major 6th. Both are relatively loud. I have been debating whether the pinging bothers me or not, but for now, the musicality has won me.

It doesn't matter if a lens is mounted. When shooting, and my face is right next to the shutter, the volume is always the same.
Oh...and transmission of sound through the facial bones might also be a factor.

I'm really particular about shutter noise.
This thread has strayed remarkably far off topic.

If Eric serviced your camera and you think something is not right send it back to him.

Steve, you sound like a doctor!

My friend tested it out and he states the same thing. Either way it doesn't matter it's already packed up and ready to ship to Mr. Hendrickson.

Hey

I just drop off a ME F for parts with Eric. Actually I got the camera off eBay, shipped it to Eric and it turns out that it couldn't be repaired. So to avoid having it shipped to Norway for 40dollars, I asked Eric to keep it.

regards

Got a package in the mail from Eric last night. It was like Christmas! Two beautifully serviced cameras and a lens were in the package. Definitely a happy (repeat) customer here. Now if only I could find someone like Eric for my non-Pentax SLRs...

Does anyone know if Eric can fix decentering on an FA31? I sent him an email but just got a generic reply regarding sending in film cameras.
