New Lenses!

So, has anyone come across any hidden treasure lately?

Here I was, trying to save money for a film scanner, and guess what I had to contend with today? I was in the camera shop at Market Square in Victoria this afternoon, chatting up the owner, when I asked if he had anything in the 85-105mm varieties for my Spotmatic. Expecting the usual answer, I was shocked when he pulled out a SuperTakumar 85! It had been traded in all of three days prior to today, hadn't been inventoried yet or graded. The cosmetics weren't perfect (some light wear and a name), but the glass was super clean with barely any dust in it. I thought about it for twenty minutes while I checked out the rest of the Square, then came back in to get it, as I wasn't sure the chance would ever present itself again (I rarely see lenses outside of the 50, 55, 135, and 200 for Takumars on the Island, and had never seen an 85 in person before). So I'm stoked, as I now have a better lens for people shots and portraiture, I'm just going to have to wait a little longer for the scanner.

Got any stories?

In a moment of brain explosion, some time ago a bought aQuantaray 400mm lens, second hand, rather cheaply.
It has sat in my case virtually unused. I have decided to do a bit of a rethink on some of my lenses.
Brought this lens out and tried it out with a good few shots. I was amazed, to be honest.
Couple of samples

all taken at a distance of about 600 to 800 meters. A little PP in Lightroom.

Yeah I found my K18/3.5 sort of that way.

I have a local camera store that I frequently visit so I can check out their used Pentax items.
I went in one time to look through their used lens case bin and found a case for a K18/3.5. You don’t come across many K series lens cases, let alone one for the somewhat rare K18/3.5. I went to the counter to talk to one of the older salesmen, who tips me off when they get some old Pentax gear in and asked sort of jokingly if they had the lens to go with the K18/3.5 case. To my horror he said yes, they just got it in and it was around somewhere. A minute later he produces a mint copy of a K18/3.5. (Second variation “smc PENTAX 1:3.5 18mm”)

Needles to say I left the store with it and the “no charge” lens case.

Phil.

Well, it is no K 18/3.5, but I came home from my first visit to the new pawn shop in town with a Tamron Adaptall SP 70-210 f/3.5 zoom for all of $20. It's a great lens, and my arms will soon be ripped from carrying it!

Nice, I love big wides like that. They also had a SMC Tak 35/3.5 there, but those are a little bit more common (I've seem one maybe twice), and I have a 28/3.5 already, so I didn't see the need.

It's always nice to pick up some good glass. I just got a 35mm Super-Takumar, and, as I'm learning, Takumars are some of the best lenses. 85 or 100mm is next on the list.

I can’t believe my luck this weekend. The EXACT same scenario happened at Kerrisdale Cameras, this time with a K35/3.5. They had just got the lens & case in the day before! I have to wait the mandatory one month for the “police check” on the lens, before I can take them home.

I already have the K35/3.5, but this new one is in slightly better condition, so I bought it anyways. LBA!!

It's nothing particularly fancy (certainly no K18/f3.5!!!) but I bought an MX of evilBay, terrible of me I know, with no photos and a title that claimed it had a 'Hoya 49mm UV lens)...

It arrives at my door and out comes a beautiful MINT smc M50/f1.7. I don't think I've ever seen one this clean!
