Craigslist Spotmatic F

I recently purchased a camera kit off craigslist that included 2 camera bodies and 5 lenses. One of the bodies ( Spotmatic F) and three of the lenses have some interesting marks on them. Some past owner had engraved a number of some sort and then some other person seems to have ground the numbers off. My first worry is that they may have been stolen. The kit was on Craigslist for quite awhile with decent photos so if they were locally stolen they should have been recovered. The seller told me he checked with the local police and they had no record of them being reported. All the serial numbers are intact. My second thought is that sometimes people used to engrave their SSN on their stuff, ( I have an old camera body with an old SSN still on it) and maybe they realized it wasn't a great idea and ground them off.

Anybody see this before?
I don't like the idea of having stolen gear so I figured I would check here.

I have purchased items so defaced. If you don't mind how they look they will work just as well.

"Operation Identification" was a program promoted by the NYPD here in the 1970's.
Citizens were encouraged to inscribe their Social Security or military service ID numbers on their valuables.
The theory was that recovered stolen items would be easier to return to their rightful owners.

As you say, now with the possibility of identity theft one should try to keep such information private.

One of my cameras has some guy's military id scribed onto the base plate. I suppose I should try and find a replacement at some point.

I have a SMC Takumar with long id # scratched onto it. Ruins an otherwise mint lens.

If it's ruined I'll take it. Will even pay postage.

I see DL numbers on lenses and bodies from time to time. On some of the ~ 40 o 50 year old gear, I wonder if the original owners are still alive or are wearing a diaper somewhere.

Ruins it aesthetically, I don't care about that. Besides, it's only a 55 1.8.

It's called social insurance.

I purchased a whole sale lot and few had identifiers and name. The lot included some color "snapshot" slides..hate to throw those away. Anyone know of a forum for "found" pictures?
