To be honest the difference with the K1000 is not big
I got mine for 40 with 3 lenses, while K1000s do not go for less than a 100
A good K1000 with M 50/2 in my local market will go from $50 to $125. A good KX, body only, will start at about $100 and go up to about $225. In other words, about the same as a MX in similar condition. I paid $125 for mine about a year ago from a PF member. A good KM, OTOH, will sell for $45 to $85 and includes DOF preview a self-timer and a real meter switch.

All that being said, good deals might be had for just about any of the camera models mentioned on this and similar threads for those willing to watch and wait and willing to buy when the opportunity avails.

(Paid $38 for my Ricoh XR-2s...so similar to the KX, but with Av mode to sweeten the deal...)

I ran into an XR-4 the other day with a 50mm/2 on it for 9.99. It was fine other than the little cover on the counter. I fought of the twitching. It even had a roll of Kodak Gold in it that now has some "light" damage.

I agree with Steve that the KM is a good bet. The KX is really nice but has a very different meter from the K1000/KM. The meter seems a bit more prone to failure than other mechanical Pentaxes. Parts are very hard to find.

Ricoh bodies can be very good. The XR-1s is a nice one, although a bit hard to find. Very similar to the XR-2s, but with fully mechanical shutter.

The major difference between the K1000 that you already have and the bodies under discussion is depth-of-field preview, which is a useful tool but absolutely critical. If you learn to use the focusing scale on your standard lens to calculate DOF you can get along just fine.

I'd say that spending money on something fancier than what you have is more a question of quality of experience than nuts-and-bolts learning. Being the owner of a couple of KXs and several MXs, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Personally, I'd go for either a KX or MX if your budget isn't too tight. The main difference for me is that the KX meter is easier to read in bright light, while the MX is very nice in low light.

Thanks to everyone for the additional replied.

So at this point I have 5 different film bodies to get started with; the K1000, K1000SE, ME, Program Plus and a ZX-50. So I think at this point I probably have more than enough to play around with, and then try to decide if I want to spend a couple extra bucks on a film camera with some additional features. By the way, the build of the K1000 bodies just feels so solid (ME as well... not as crazy about the plastic feel of the ZX-50).

One other quick question that perhaps should be in a different thread; is there a preferred brand/type of B+W film I should use to get started?

Thanks for the link.

I actually saw that a couple days ago and had been going back and forth on whether or not I should buy it. It's a pretty good price with the A50/1.7. That said, I have a mint A50/1.7 and a Program Plus (which i realize lacks some of the features of the Super) so I didn't jump on it right away.

Part of me feels I should buy my first roll of film before my 6th film camera body

I would think so

Or I could pick up another dozen and use them as rear caps for all my lenses... might be a cool way to display the lens collection on a dozen K1000 bodies

Actually, come to think about it, I would have 8 bodies except that I gave 3 away (1 ME Super and a couple P3) over the past year under the assumption that I would never want to try and shoot film
