By the way, I was able to run a test roll through the new ESII. It and the SMC 50/1.8 seem capable. My deck had recently been refinished, then rain fell and formed beads on the newly resistant paint, then the weather turned freezing and crystals formed. This was wide-open, I believe:

(Apologies for the large rubbish particle that got onto the negative in scanning.]

I did test what I thought was the questionable metering that I had seen dry-firing through an old Super Tak. With film, and mounting the Super Tak 35/2, below are four shots at f/2, f/4, f/8, and f/16 in rapid succession, letting the ESII choose the shutter speeds. Given that f/2, f/4, and f/16 worked to provide pretty uniform exposure, I think the meter is doing fine and the third shot (F/8) probably involved some kind of, er, user error. Or the problem I mentioned above where long auto-exposures aren't long unless the release is held down, and maybe on just this frame I didn't do that?

So I'm happy with the purchase overall. Next phase is serious trial by fire: trying to follow and photograph fast-moving two-year-old niblings, under weak indoor light, with this kit over Christmas.

Thanks for the advice &c. you all provided above.
