My dad bought one of these when I was born (in 1980) to record all those fun childhood memories. Then, when my sister was born (in 1985) he got obsessed with video and it got forgotten in a drawer. I would sometimes pull it out and play with it when I was barely strong enough to lift it, just because I loved the way it felt.

Put it to real use when I was in high school photography class, ten years ago.

Recently went back to my mom's to ransack the place in search of my baby, and found it, only to discover that she'd been letting the grandkids play with it. It was out of its back, no lens cap, and dirty as hell. The bag, second lens, and flash are all MIA, which breaks my heart (and chaps my hiney... this thing is my only inheritance and I love it!).

It's in the shop right now getting cleaned up and repaired (new spring in the film advance lever, new light seal, new battery, etc....). I can't wait to pick it up Saturday.

I'm already obsessing over replacement and additional lenses on ebay, and wishing my family wasn't in tight-belt mode due to the economy...

I have one. Not entirely sure of the age, but I would most likely have bought it mint, used, in 1995 or '96. Mine has the metal top and baseplates so it isn't one of the final versions.

I only shoot digital now, but every so often I get the K1000 out of the wardrobe to play with as it's just a wonderfully tactile machine. You can feel all the components meshing and clicking into place as you operate it.

I might get some monochrome film and a developing tank one day, as the main reason for my not using film now is the difficulty of getting it processed. Time was when the local chemist would have your prints within a week, I suspect if you went in there now with a film they'd wonder where you left your time machine!

K1000 "Safari Edition"

Years ago on eBay I saw a couple of K1000 bodies painted olive or khaki green.
They were very nicely done. About the coolest looking K1000 I have ever seen.

Mine came with a F2.0 lens

Yes I have one too, I got it for Christmas a month early to use on vacation in 1983, right before my son was born. I heard someone say the shutter is clunky. To me my SF1 shutter is more clunky sounding. But of course I love it. I took the
K1000 all over the world while I was in the Navy, and it performed very well. I never had a more simple setup, which I miss in the digital realm.

I'm not sure what you mean by "clunky", but FWIW cloth shutters like that
on your K1000 are quieter than metal shutters common on SLR cameras...

K1000s thief bait

I lost 2 K1000s to house burgulars. The 1st was stolen around 1986, it's replacement K1000 was stolen 3 years later.

The 2nd K1000 was replaced with a P3N [spousal request for some auto features]. A much better home security system has prevented theft of the P3N at least 5 times.

The K1000 was my 1st SLR, and I wish I still had one for nostalgic reasons. If a K1000 in very good condition crosses my path, who knows?

Edit: A very nice K1000-SE did cross my path Summer 2010

I have one. It replaced, in 1987, my stolen Spotmatic, purchased in 1967. I will never sell it. Now I use a K10, which feels like the Sprotmatic to me. Nice!!

Bought my first K1000 about a month ago from a local ad. Just months earlier picked up an ME from right here.
As advertised; basic, good and solid.
