Who has a K1000?

Of my three remaining 35mm Pentax SLR cameras, one is a K1000 SE. It is my 4th K1000 (all bought new), one of the previous ones was returned (and exchanged) because of a faulty film advance. Another was a "brown clad" SE and the first was a "regular" K1000. My "current" K1000 SE is "chrome" and black. The reason that I don't consider the K1000 to be "a Spotmatic with a K-mount" is because the Spotmatic (which was my first Pentax) effectively had depth of field preview using the stop down metering switch, a self timer, AND a "travel lock" below the shutter release. The K1000 (and K1000 SE) which had NONE of these features SHOULD have had (IMHO) ALL THREE (OR at the very least, DOF preview to be "touted" for years as a "student" camera).

True, KungPOW, the KM (and other models) were "out there"... BUT I STILL HEARD (many times) that the K1000 was the "ideal" student camera (OR a similar statement).
I personally never had a "problem" with the K1000 (or SE) being somewhat "featureless"... because I had other bodies and often used screw mount lenses (with A/M switches) on the K1000.
What I liked especially was a manual shutter body that was reliable over a wide temperature range and wasn't "battery dependent" (except for metering).

Just curious (since I see a lot of "collectors" here)... how many (which) Pentaxes had "travel locks" (usually at the "base" of the shutter release)? The "later" (electric/electronic) cameras used the "power" on/off switch for that purpose, but I'm talking about mechanical shutter (release) locks.

shutter locks appeared I think with the last of the spotmatic series. the ES maybe? I know the ESII had one. pretty much all pentax bodies after that had them. I believe that to be the case. maybe some of the lower end models maybe didnt though. but late m42 and pretty much all K mount film bodies before the power on/off switch.

My Spotmatic F has the "travel" lock. I wish my K1000 had one also,but, I've made it through 32 years (on the K1000) without one so I guess I can go a little longer.
Which answers the question "Who has a k1000".

The KM and later K1000 were the "entry level" K-series cameras,
and do not have a shutter release lock. The KX, K2 and K2DMD do.

Don't have one today, because a former significant other took it 20 years ago, but there are lots of memories looking at these photos.

My wife used a Pentax K1000 for many years, since her first college photo course in the early 1980's.
A few years ago she stopped using it. If she ever makes peace with eyeglasses perhaps she'll pick it up again.

I now own the very similar Pentax KM. It is lovely. I use it when I want to go "barebones".

Still have the one I bought with my first paycheck back in the late 70's. Haven't used it since I got my K10D but am looking to load it up again shortly. Like in the next couple of weeks.

I had one, bought from a pawn shop, that I used for my first high school photography class. My dad had pulled his old Yashica 44 out of the closet for me to use, but I lobbied for a 35mm SLR for a couple of reasons: 1) dealing with finding, loading and learning to develop 127 film was a little tedious for me compared to the SLRs everyone else in the class was using, and 2) at that age (I think I was 15-16) I thought I looked weird with an "ancient" TLR. Now I'm trying to find a way to get my dad to give it to me before it winds up in an estate sale. The Yashica and the K1000 are probably still in a closet at his house where I left them when I made a cross-country move. I eventually wound up with an Olympus OM-1, which I've also enjoyed, but I still have a lot of affection for the K1000.

My current Pentax is a 6X7, and since someone had asked about shutter locks, I'll chime in that the 6X7 has one.
