ME Super Size with ASA 3200?

I've looked so far but I can't find any cameras that are the size of an ME super and go up to ISO/ASA 3200. Does anyone know of anything in K-mount that fits this bill? Or am I best off picking up an MX and underexposing ISO 1600 by a stop?

Oh and I know that the LX would work for this but I don't have $400 for a film camera. It would have to come in around $100.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
You have a ton of options in K-mount bodies. Both my Ricoh XR7 and Pentax Super Program support ISO 3200 (both are about the size of an ME Super). The camera review section of this site as well as Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page have a wealth of information for Pentax-brand cameras. For non-Pentax bodies, you can use Google or look at the owner's manuals at the Butkus site.

Super-A (aka Super Program) and its brother the Program-A are actually even slightly thinner than the ME/ME-Super and MX.

The Chinon CE-4s goes to 3200. Nice little camera- like an Me Super with DOF preview added. Conventional shutter speed dial rather than buttons.

With exposure compensation the ME Super can expose for ISO 3200.

I agree. I'm currently using my Program Plus for 3200 iso. I assume that it will turn out well, I've always been happy with the pics that it took...but we'll see, I'm currently on roll #1. As for using the exposure comp on the ME Super to solve your problem, I'm not sure if this will work as it effectively changes the programmed ISO and there should be a hard stop after 1600.

Ed: I also forgot, if you want to replace the MX, the K1000 will go up to 3200 ISO, but it's a little bigger

No it can't. At ISO 1600, the exposure compensation on the ME Super will only go to x2 and x4, not to x1/2 or x1/4. In other words, at 1600 ISO the exposure compensation dial will only move in the direction of overexposure. It will not underexpose at 1600. You can of course go to manual mode and manually underexpose by a stop.

Yup, I have a Chinon CG-5 I used to use for >1600 ISO shots. (Of course, the irony is that the viewfinder's nowhere near as bright as the ME's, but, then again, the ME's exceptionally bright.)

But it's a good, solid camera. Feels night, actually a little more sturdy than the MEs, shutter does sound cooler, comes with DOF preview, AE lock, and electronic self-timer. Also, it's black, and if eBay's taught us anything, black is better.

They're a bit hard to find, and I'm not saying you ought seek it out above all else, but if you come across one, pick it up! It's a lesser-known brand, so it'll be cheaper than most cameras.

Just pick up a P3n. While not quite as good as the ME super the viewfinder is still decent, and the actual numbers for the shutter speeds are backilt. It is really comfortable in the hand, it works to at least some level with every lens Pentax has ever made, and it is really easy to find one for very little money. The only two really bad things about it are the lack of manual ISO and no exposure comp, but the second one is easily handled with either the meter lock or just manually dialing in your shutter speed. Did I mention that the shutter speed is on a dial that can easily be spun with your finger while you are still looking through the viewfinder? Other then the proliferation of plastic on the outside (still metal inside) there really isn't much to dislike about the P3n. Yo could also go with the P30t, which is the same camera with a funky color scheme and a diagonal split image instead of horizontal.

While the P-series are generally good bodies for their intended use, the upper limit for ISO (DX-coded) is 1600. I'd suggest a Chinon CE-4(s) too. From experience it feels a little cheap, but the shutter wheel is a nice alternative to the ME Super selector and buttons. Note, however, that there is no 'mechanical' shutter speed as on the ME S. It needs (three) standard SR/LR44 to function at all.

These little touches, such as ISO limitations, are what kept Pentax classified as an 'amateur' camera, not quite up there with the real good ones. That's what I thought at the time when I went ahead and bought an Olympus.

Of course, we can argue that we don't need the high ISO... except the last b&w 1600 film is gone and we're left with pulling 3200 or pushing 400 if we want them in these Pentaxes.

You can get a silver KX for around $100 and it has an ASA range of 8-6400. It's not that much bigger than a ME.

The Super A / Super Program is the same size as a ME Super + a slim grip, and goes to 3200.

I was just about to say the same thing. And the KX is a joy to use also!
