Ok, I would like you to imagine that all of the SLR cameras where to stop working all around the world and there was no repair possible as from today.
You do however get to change your SLR for a nice new Pentax DSLR at no extra cost (I told you it's hypothetical) and you where permitted one function or one feature from your SLR and put it on to the DSLR.
What would you choose?

Fortunately I'd still have my viewfinder (rangefinder, scale focus and AF) film cameras!

Shutter speed dial.
No hesitation.
To me, a shutter speed dial, aperture ring, and light meter are all you need for good exposures. I want no more and no less on my camera. Now a good roll of film and a bright viewfinder help, but they're bonuses in my book.

I am with you. Modal controls. Add in the non-crippled mount (see above) and I will be happy.

I forgot about crippled mounts! My Spotmatic is M42, and crippled M42 does not exist, and my other cameras are a 35mm KX and a fixed-lens RF, so....
But yea. Shutter speed dial and non-crippled mount. Also I would leave the flash off and put a full-size PENTAPRISM in. After all, I would be replacing my camera with a camera named for PENTAprism refleX.

Not a bad suggestion, but I think a lot of times full-frame is a crutch used by people who like old-school manual, mechanical cameras. If we said we wanted a shutter speed dial, or a real prism, or feature X, people would say "ah, but later film bodies don't even have that" and then the argument collapses. Full-frame though, no K mount, or even affordable, DSLR, has full-frame.

Not to disagree with the point of your post - but one addition:

Many who wish for a K-mount digital camera with a 36x24 sensor already own cameras that can use an analog 36x24 sensor (135 film). What we really want is a digital camera that can utilize the entire image circle produced by our old-school lenses.

I'm with you on that. My 55mm is my 55mm, NOT my short tele. My short tele is my short tele. The 35mm is a wide-angle lens, not a standard lens. I want to be able to work with my lenses the same as I always have, changing to digital shouldn't HAVE to mean re-building the lens kit to fit a different sensor size. I like the FOV of my 135mm as is, I don't want to change it!
So you're right, I just overlooked that point, because I don't shoot digital. It hadn't occurred to me.
