Note that these are somewhat fictional 'list' prices, street pricing would be much lower.

In 1976 Garden camera wanted $175 for a KX body, list $295 above.
The 85/1.8 sells for $155, list $265.
85-210 $320/$550
24/3.5 $160/$270
Subtracting the KX body only price from KX+50/1.2 gives the lens a price of $171

Note that street prices would have varied month to month: by supply and demand, and how recently the item was introduced.

On the other hand, interestingly the SMC TAK 85/1.8 is the same price as the K, the 24 is $6 more, the Tak version of the 80-210 is $6 less than the K.

For $238 you had your choice of a KM with 50/1.4, or Spot F with 50/1.4.

The advertised prices were often somewhat fictional, too.
Almost invariably when you called to place your order the price had gone up.
And sellers commonly forced you to pay extra for the included accessories (i.e. caps, manual, batteries etc.)
or unnecessary accessories e.g. no-brand flash, "lens cleaning kit", etc.
IIRC a $29.99 screw-on WA/tele lens attachment set was a favorite add-on.

One can see here that prices of the lenses have either stayed almost the same or even shot up and the prices of the body have mostly gone down, making true the reasoning, that lenses are actually better investments than the camera bodies which becomes easily outdated.

Isn't the 50/1.2 the K version? It's around 250-350 used now, so it's not really that different (granted it's used). That 85mm really was cheap though... drool~

Garden Camera was fairly reputable as were B&H and Adorama. Some others (Bass Camera in Chicago, for example) were notorious for bait and switch. I always got confirmation on price, model specifics, box content, U.S. warranty and such in writing before placing orders.

I’ve been looking for a Pentax Canadian price list from around the time I got my KX kit. I found one today at the actual camera store that I bought the kit from in late 1975.

This price list is from October 1st, 1975 and was issued by the Canadian Pentax distributor, McQueen Sales Company Ltd.

The kit I purchased was:

KX Body Chrome, Micro Prism: $349.95
SMC Pentax 55mm f:1.8 Lens: $124.95
SMC Pentax 28mm f:3.5 Lens: $165.95
SMC Pentax 135mm f:3.5 Lens: $154.95

That’s $795.80 list price in 1975 and accounting for inflation equals to $3,497.48 in today’s dollars! (Band of Canada inflation calculator)

Since I just started working full time after graduating from high school and was making under $5.00 per hour. That’s over 700 hours of work to buy the kit!

Not sure how I afforded that back then, living at home helped and I’m sure my mom kicked in some money.

Here is an attached scan of the price list.

Phil.

K100 film?

Who else noticed the "K100" in the Garden ad? (right-hand page) Is that some obscure early K-series body? I've never heard of a K100 film camera...maybe it's a typo.
