pentax ME super discovered, now the problems of getting it to work

hello people

a few weeks ago, after helping out my father clean the attic, i found out this old pentax camera in aparently mint condition, which even my father didnt remember he had it, so he said keep it if it still works.

i opened it, it had a old film inside which i took it off, and took the batteries away so i could get new ones,

so yesterday i did have a chance to buy new batteries and a new film, the problem is that the shutter button can be pressed but nothing happens, i put up some new batteries, some lights on the viewfinder work, but nothing else happens.

after opening the camera back and taking out the lenses, i took these pictures, they might help with its problem

the rapid wind lever doesnt move more than this

when i press the shutter nothing happens, and the plastic part barely moves

the mirror is in this position and doesnt move down unless i use my fingers,

and out of curiosity, the lenses has this crackling marks

but i tried it and it focus okay, but is it bad?

is this camera rescuable? i've been looking around the internet for solutions, i think i can fix this, if its not too much difficult.

The shutter is locked up. It is a easy fix but be very careful. Remove the three screws on the base plate and remove it. Be careful to place the screws and plate into a safe spot. Next the film wind shaft is a small ratch pin lock. It is binding on the shaft causing the shutter yo lock up. Gently take it off of the shaft to release it. The shutter should advance releasing it to unlock the camera. Do not force anything or you will damage some of the linkages that connect shutter release to the film advance shaft. This should free up the shutter to fire. Mine did the same thing and I left it like that for 4 years before I was told what to do. It works fine now. Just place the cover back on the camera once it is working again.

As for the lens give it a try either on the ME Super or a D-slr if you have one. I have read of some people have cracks like that on their lenses with too much impact on image quality. Try it out will not hurt anything other the possible messed up image.

...'em ain't crackling marks...'ems fungus. At least it looks like fungus to me. Not a good thing and likely contagious to your other lenses. Good luck on fixing the mirror linkage.

Indeed, does look like fungus. But doesn't really look too bad. I bought an SMC M 135mm lens a few years back which had the same looking fungus. I removed the rear element and swabbed the offending nasties off with some 91% Isopropyl. Been fine ever since. TMMV, of course....
Good luck!

I actually had luck unlocking one of these by pressing the aperture actuating lever on the left side (as you look at it).

And another took a firm slap into my opposing palm (Bang-on-Hand method).

Then if those don't work, view post #2...it's time for the bottom cover to come off. Luckily, poking around with a small screwdriver generally works

Unluckily, definitely fungus What lens is it? The M lenses are fairly easy to take apart and many have directions to do that on the internet...as long as it's not a zoom. Those are hard.

As Steve says, you want to isolate "fungalated" lens from any other lens you might have.
Shutter is froze at half cycle,Set mode dial to 125x(no batteries required there)
if you have a plastic card, use it as a tool to gently press
down on rivet of armature.Arrow on your pic shows where.Careful not to bend
shutter leaves when you engage. Can use fingernail, but you'll leave a little bodily oil
on surface that will hold dust.Straight down, towards bottom of camera.
You'll hear mirror drop at full cycle, keep fingers away from mirror box so everything
goes smoothly. If mirror doesnt drop, then repeat in same manner.
Theres a handy link in post below yours here on ME supers, will walk you through it

Hi Keanu,Safe to say that mirror dropped too?(just so we know were we're at)

This is where Im a little unclear,

...shutter cycled, mirror dropping or released at end of shutter stroke?
after you did that...
Tried to rewind for another shot and rewind lever froze?...
or
Rewound sucessfully,"fully armed",hit shutter button and eveything froze
as you first noted?
or
your speaking of rewind lock itself?

Here is the link mentioned,is in several threads here.Real handy.
Have a look at it,study things, then come on back with some thoughts.

Favorite Classics > Pentax ME Super Ramblings > Three Common Failure Problems

Have my own ideals about cleaning fungas, fairly aggressive in regards to
cleaning agent,I suggest research.Never done it on pentax lens with SMC
thats why Im reluctant to say.

Here is a link to cleaning the lens (all the M 50mm are put together the same) Shooting with a Pentax K10D: Cleaning from fungus: SMC Pentax-M 50 f/1.7

You will need a couple tools to get the front ring off and a spanner or two. Or you could sell it as-is then pick up a good one for $40-50
