What actually makes the BW image in C41 film processed this way? Does it contain silver, and if so, does that account for it?
The color in color films comes from dyes in different layers. The film itself is still silver-based. All color films are basically black and white films with some extra layers of color dye and color filters added. C-41 b&w films probably just have these additional layers stripped away.

Here's another re-edit of mine. I shot this in 2011 and I like it and want to make a print so yesterday I decided to re-scan it with my Scan Dual IV to truy and see if I'd get better results than from my V500. I did do a fair bit of adjustment to the mid tones in PP which I think brings out the grain much more.

The Scan Dual IV should do a MUCH better job than the V500!

Thanks.
The 24/2.8 is a sweet lens to have for film.

It did
Once I got the hang of the software a bit. Still need to figure it out more. I find that the Epson software gives pretty good result without to much adjustment. The Minolta software seems to need a lot more user input, but then the results are much better.
