It is my understanding that quality took a huge slide in the mid-to-late '70s with the 4M and 4AM models being pretty much abysmal.

Yeah, mine was made in 1980. If I had fallen in love with it, I would probably have replaced it with an earlier model because I do know the quality is much better (almost Contax quality) but apart from the lens, which I think produces great shots, I don't really like using it. Perhaps I'm not a rangefinder sort of guy
