There is also some information about the Hernandez shot in his book, The Negative. The light situation, the filter, exposure and the post processing of the negative were given for that scene.
Yes, I have read the orderly account in "The Negative". There has also been some forensic work done on surviving prints as well as the original negative showing how his interpretation changed over time. I have seen photos of the negative and I, personally, would not want to try printing it.

I tried to find the article, but today Google was not my friend. What I was able to find was an image taken from the original contact print.

Yes, the negative is the score and the print the performance.

Digging in the basement, I found an old strip of FP4, from which these three are decent enough to make it onto the web (I know I won't get permission for the others!) K1000, SMC50/2.0, FP4, Acutol, X1 scans:

A real thing of beauty there - both the model and the photos

Canon FTb.
Tamron Adaptall-2 28mm f2.5.
Ilford XP2 Super.

Hand held, and wishing I had had a tripod. A slightly longer exposure so that more than just the near section of the train was blurred would have been preferred, I think.

That's interesting and some pretty nice results. But what begs the question is why you'd attempt using such and expired developer?
I live life to the fullest, on the edge, testing my wings and pushing the envelope.

Either that or I was too lazy to find where I had my Rodinal dilution/time notes in the box of chemistry and developing implements.

One more from that roll

Gotta say - those are pretty impressive and testament to that stuff. Did you extend the normal dev times at all?

Twelve minutes, straight solution. I'd shot at f/8 and 1/500 mostly. The negatives are denser than usual.
