That area is the density of the film's base plus fog and the deepest black the film can produce and well call it zone 0. It's being reproduced around zone 1. You can use that as a guide when adjusting the contrast curve of the scan. And it also can indicate if the scene is under exposed in general.

But I was thinking what @tuco mentioned when I saw them. But it doesn't really matter.
Like Tuco, my question is whether the having the sprockets in the frame biased the auto-exposure of the scanner. If the scanner has the ability to choose black and white point, I would set black point to the area outside the frame.

What I do find rather funny is the many instafiltermatic-azizers that *add* sprocket holes to frame a shot. Pop up in pic feeds everywhere (though less often it seems lately) and I always giggle at seeing the same sprocket holes and "film code" in the same position for a each and every shot someone posts. It's "retro".
Yeah I think the idea is that it equates to "authenticity".

Some nice street scenes. How is the exposure of your film? I ask because the unexposed areas of the film common to the sprockets is showing other than the film's deepest black. That area is the density of the film's base plus fog and the deepest black the film can produce and well call it zone 0. It's being reproduced around zone 1. You can use that as a guide when adjusting the contrast curve of the scan. And it also can indicate if the scene is under exposed in general.

Including the un-exposed part of the film throws the auto-exposure way off so I need to reset it manually and I just do this by eye, trying to get the dark areas dark enough without dropping them to pure black. The negatives look OK and to the best of my knowledge my MX exposes OK. The only problems I'm finding are with shots which I suspect were taken with my A 28mm f/2.8, which seems to over-expose by around a stop on both film and digital. On the K3 it's obvious and easy to adjust for, on film it's easy to forget and not adjust exposure from what the meter indicates.

I've been scanning negs for the whole time I've been shooting film (around six years now) and it's a constant and painful learning experience still. Next time I break out the scanner I'll take your comments into account and see how the results are and if I prefer them - feedback is appreciated

You certainly came away with some great photo's in this series--this one, especially, I hope claimed some space on a wall.

Here's a question. Can you push Acros 100 five stops?

I'd picked up my Mamiya M645 1000s after a few months and saw I'd just started a roll of Ilford Delta 3200. So I did some indoor shots, including a vege market and a museum, and because I'd taken my time and each shot was carefully considered I thought there'd be a few keepers. Imagine my surprise when I opened up the camera and discovered, instead of Delta 3200, a roll of Acros 100. I'm usually so conscientious about exchanging the box ends so I'd know what I was shooting. But not this time. I was just going to throw the roll away but then I thought it might be an interesting experiment to see how far I could push it. These examples are after 20 minutes of ilford ilfotec lc 29 at 1/19. It's not too bad but not something I'd try again.
What's interesting is the only shots which were worthwhile keeping were those at the long exposure end. In this case 1/125, 2.8. Anything faster barely registered on the negative. There was nothing to push.

Thank you so much! The wall project is still ongoing, I must say.

Imber village, or what's left of it

Ilford Delta 400, Super A, A35-70mm f16 and 1/250.
These are scanned by the lab for 4x6 prints and are no match for the smooth scanned images I've seen here for Delta 400. I know Id need to invest in a scanner if I carry on with film.

Poole harbor, the tug Kingston - London.
I spoke to a crew member about her, she is a solid boat and still working. They were about to depart to Rotterdam for a month, taking a tow to Estonia.

Not bad at all for 5 stops! Very nice.

I once did something similar: grabbed a green-and-white cannister thinking it was Neopan 1600, only to find out after I'd shot it that it was a roll of Neopan SS that I'd forgotten I had in the fridge. Thankfully only had to push 4 stops in that case.
