Taking the Fuji GW690III rangefinder (90mm version) out for a walk. I was thinking the kids who once shots some hoops here could have children of their own.

Exactly

Rangefinders work really well for this type of shooting, but realistically you could use any camera to get this shot.
Could you elaborate on that please? The reason I ask is that I don't really get rangefinders and I'm trying to figure out why. I've got two rangefinders, a Kiev 4 that I've had for years but with a leaky shutter so it never gets used now. Also this year, a neighbour gifted me a mint Yashica Electo 35 GTN which works very well and has a nice fixed 45mm lens. Thing is.... I struggle with rangefinder focusing. I prefer the split prism of an SLR. I'm guessing that when you say that a rangefinder works well on the street, you are zone focusing it?

In my experience, it’s largely the noise. Rangefinders are generally eerily quiet compared to slrs.

If the rangefinder mirrors are aligned and in good shape, I’ve found the focusing experience very similar to a slr split image focusing screen.
Though I’ve used a number of rangefinders with lousy mirrors...

Otherwise, you’re right, there’s no meaningful difference in zone focusing either one...

After jonesing for a RF for many years, I finally got one (Ricoh 35s) with a broken RF. I prefocus and use it for framing, albeit with a blurry yellow rectangle in the middle. Film loading and advance is a nightmare. I love it!

Having spent most of my photographic life using SLRs, I wanted to try using a rangefinder, so my lady love bought me a FED2. I was surprised at how easy I found focusing it. Just recently, a friend of mine thrust his Leica M6 in my hand and said he thought I would enjoy trying it. Of all the (limited) number of rangefinders I have tried, the patch is the clearest I have used and once you have your fingertip on the little protrusion on the lens it is really quick and easy to focus. My main complaint is that the aperture ring and focus ring on the 35mm lens are so small, that I find it hard to locate them with my fingers whilst I am looking through the viewfinder. I dare say that with a lot of use I'd get used to it, but I find the bigger rings on my SLR lenses easier to use. Although the Leica is clearly really well made, I'm not convinced I'd choose to spend my money on one rather than, say, a nice LX with a good set of lenses (and still have a few thousand to spend on film and developing).

Not all RFs are created equal in their ease and ability to focus.
Leicas are the easiest to use, with super bright and defined patches. I have a bunch of other RF cameras and they all have that ill-defined blob instead of a bright clear patch. Those are much harder to focus. And some are really really hard to focus depending on age and condition.
