Yes, the darn things still cost too much. I'd recommend the Pentax Digital Spotmeter for its nice small size but it can be a significant purchase. And really the only thing that seems digital about it is the lights in the display; otherwise, its use is like the older analogue Spotmeter V which I also have. It's cheaper and like it too but it doesn't fit in a pocket very well.
Using one also requires time learning to get predicable results. Shooting with only a few film brands helps. Record some of your metering and eventually you'll know where all black and lost highlights fall relative to your selected middle gray to a good enough accuracy.
It can also be taken to the next level by reading the density of areas on the negative with a densitometer and strive for a 1/3 stop accuracy with your work but with scanning you don't need to be that accurate, I feel.
