It's a cool "virtual drum" slide/transparency scanner. It takes and bends the negative in an arc, and scans from he apex. They're pretty damned expensive, but my university has one for students to use. (:

Man, I'd like to try that scanner. I have a glass carrier for mine and it really sucks. The problem is over time with all the cleaning it starts to get micro scratches and I can start to see the glass in the scan. Plus keeping 4 surfaces of glass and 2 surfaces of film clean is too much.
In my last few posts I took off the top glass lid and just taped the negative down. Much improved in clarity and less dust but you can see a blurry spot on the left next to my nephew's backpack. The negative was not flat enough apparently. The Flextight with a drum looks like it solves that problem.
I stopped shooting film after I took a photography class when I was 16. I didn't think I could afford film. Now I just miss the full 35mm frame, the DOF, and film grain (instead of sensor noise). Also, Pentax doesn't make a "full-frame" yet, and I couldn't afford it even if they did. (;
Yeah! I've found that scanners with film "holders" do a better job of holding the negative flat, and since that keeps the negative suspended away from the glass surfaces I imagine it makes it easier for the lens to focus on the negative.
