Not sure what is happening there, but great shots of it!

I found an old camera with a partially shot roll of film loaded in it, and I had no idea what I might have been shooting when I decided to abandon the poor thing in a closet at the office two years ago. It was cheap color film, Fuji Superia Xtra 400, and I did not want to either pay to have it processed without knowing what was on it or buy $20 worth of batteries to shoot the rest of it in a camera that I don't use anymore. So...I thought ... why not experiment with Caffenol?

These are shots from that partial roll developed in Caffenol-C-H (instant coffee, Vitamin C, washing soda and iodized salt) for 17 mins @ 20*C. Honestly, I am surprised anything turned out, but really surprised to get this result on my first attempt with the stuff on C-41 film.

Minolta Maxxum | Carolina Cotton | 2011

I didn't add toning to any of these, and I am at a loss for why some of them look more like traditional black and white shots and other look more sepia toned, but I think I like the look of it either way. Thoughts? Constructive Criticism (I know there are a couple of water spots, wasn't as careful as I should have been on this test run)?

That is an incredible spot, and a really great shot of it.

I know this isn't a terribly sophisticated reference, and your picture far exceeds anything in it, but t reminds me of the beach in the movie Goonies,
Thanks. Yes, it was the opening scene in the movie, IIRC.

Well, obviously, if you used starbuckenol you'd get deeper, richer tones.

Is the orange base of the film still present and the reason for the sepia tone, I wonder.

Though I am not embarrassed for trying something new. In fact, it was fun, I am reasonably happy with the result all things considered.

It definitely is not the same as black and white film once it is processed, but it isn't orange as it would be if processed in C41 either. It is actually more of a brown tone. I scanned it as color film which should have removed any remaining orange mask, but maybe it is? Possibly staining from the developer? or just the resulting color? At any rate, it could easily be done away with in lightroom.

Thanks! I think I do too, maybe even more after seeing the BW conversions, and will try it again.

I once was reading an article where a guy used caffineol on chromogenic film and got HUGE dynamic range. Something like close to 20 stops, IIRC.

What actually makes the BW image in C41 film processed this way? Does it contain silver, and if so, does that account for it?

You're asking the wrong person. I have no idea.

I have never seen Goonies, but know that it was filmed a few miles to the north in Astoria, so a Cannon Beach location is quite likely.

Ah, but a few drops of fat-free creambromied in starbuckenol solves that problem.
