I already agreed on point #2, but point #1 was a surprise to me. After a brief period of research, it turns out one can process one's own B/W film quite cheaply, and the instructions I've found (from Ilford) seem to indicate only an idiot can mess it up. As an idiot, I've decided I'm gonna test that theory. :-)

Thanks for your help, bobbotron!
Good luck!

FWIW, it's alarming I be taken as a source of knowledge on this subject, I'm sure there are a lot of colour film shooters out there that disagree with me, with good arguments in their favour.

Question from a film neophyte (therefore this may be stupid.... apologies in advance). What advantage is there to B/W film that can't be gained by converting color film images in post? My Kx arrives this week. :-)
Composition in black and white is very different than color to me. There are lost of things that are not very interesting to look at in black and white. Sunrises and sunsets come to mind as somethings that are very difficult to capture. The same goes for color as well, especially with all the over the top post processing. These are not axioms though. I shoot almost entirely film because I like that I can use different film but my digital camera will always have the same sensor. Legacy glass is a lot cheaper as well. If you can make brownies out of a box, you can process film. I was gonna do my first C-41 last week but one of my chemicals got spilled so that will be delayed.

I have shot 3 films at Tyseley, plus 3 exposure of an existing roll in my new to me K1000SE with the K24 mm f2.8, two with the LX and the super(heavy) 35-210 zoom (one in B&W and one in colour with Portra160) and another one with my trusty Jenaflex (a rebadged Praktica BC-1) with the small kit I have for that camera (CZJ Pancolar 50mm f1.4, CZJ Vario-Sonnar 80-200mm, and the Flektogon 20mm f2.8 that was useful to frame entire locomotives), if you want I can publish more shots, unfortunately it was raining so I got a white overcast sky that doesn't help distinguishing all the steam they were producing, when I was there it was impressive.

Looks good, like the out of focus area in the second/third shot.
