Those look really nice - contrast is just right, great tones and almost no sign of grain. They remind me of Fuji Acros.
Much like Acros, RR 80s has very fine grain and great tonality. How they differ is with spectral reponse. Acros is billed as being ortho-panchromatic, meaning it has extended blue sensitivity and is stunted at the red end. RR 80s is somewhat opposite and has been labeled as super-panchromatic with somewhat reduced blue sensitivity and red sensitivity into the near infrared. With an IR filter mounted, RR 80s can be used for IR photography. That far red sensitivity can result in strange contrast with grass and foliage in full sun.

Example showing how reds and skin tones render:

Rollei Retro 80s (HC-110, dilution H):

RR 80s uses a 100μ polyester base and dries quite flat. Below is a link to white paper that was written shortly after RR 80s came to market:

I'm digging these. I like how close you are able to get to the action.

I once shot part of a boxing match at the Halifax Forum sometime during the late '80s. It was early in the undercard, might have even been the first fight, which I figured would not be of too much interest to the crowd. Wrong. I went right up to ringside. Nobody tried to stop me, but the folks whose view I was blocking started screaming. I became frightened after grabbing 4 or 5 frames, and beat a retreat.

Rollei SL35, Vivitar 75-205 CF zoom (two-ring), film? HP5 or Tri-x, likely pushed. Flatbed scanned from silver-gelatin print on 8x10 paper.

Very impressed with it, I have got another roll to try out and will almost certainly be buying more after that, as an added bonus its so cheap as well.
Good to know. Scanning, for me, is far and away the most difficult and tedious part of my process of shooting film and having negatives that don't curl is critical to getting good results. So much so that I would not knowingly use a film that dried curly even if it had the finest grain and best tones in the world.

I can only get Rollei films by internet order, but they are reasonably priced, so I might put in an order for some of this, though I just received a sizeable order of Agfa APX 100. Many thanks for bringing this film to my attention.

Here are a few more shots from the local market. All with a Pentax SFXn and Auto Revuenon 50mm f/1.4 on T-Max 400.

That's a brilliant shot, and a great demonstration of how overrated sharpness has become

Thank you both, but it was really down to luck: I'm not a fan or follower of boxing (unlike my brother-in-law!), this was the first and only live match I've attended, let alone photographed. Can't remember if I got any other usable shots, but this is undoubtedly the best of the lot.

That foot stepping the boxer is doing just cracks me up each time I see.

Yeah that's pretty wild. Didn't even notice it until I made the print.

Well said.

("Sharpness is a bourgeois concept" said Cartier-Bresson, who shot Leica...)

I am really slow at getting my rolls processed scanned and shrunk for uploading to the internet, but I think I have mostly caught up. Here are some shots from last winter tobogganing at the golf course close to my house.

Nice set. But if you waited a little longer it would be winter here in the norther hemisphere and it would look timely.

Then they would be a year old. But you are right they do maybe seem a little out of place. I will hopefully catch up with the seasons soon. Many of the rest of the images I have do not have snow in them.

These were shot with an MX and either FP4 or HP5. unsure of the lens but likely the CV40 f2, M28 f2.8 or and M100 f2.8. Shots of around Halifax, NS from the ferry to the new library which is pretty cool.

If you want timely, get a web cam. Photography is timeless.
