I use Vuescan rather than Silverfast or the Epson software.

The Epson software has one serious limitation. It's not possible to (or at least I can't) adjust scanning area once the software has "made up it's mind". I've come across occasions when the software makes mistakes.
I have also used Vuescan and it's good, maybe as good as Siverfast. For some reason (probably because it gave me the best results) I ended up using Silverfast as my prime scanning software for the Epson scanner. I use Vuescan and other software for other scanners.

As I often say, whatever works! My V750 was bought through work and they could never sort out the complexities of the licencing for Silverfast, and in the end I gave-up and bought my own licence for Vuescan.

OK, enough with scanner software discussions here. Back to posting photos. Here is one more with PENTAX K2, SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7, T-MAX 400, Epson V850

What do you mean by "scanning area." Do you have Epson Scan set to automatically select the images for scanning? Thumbnails or whatever it's called? I never do this. I always do a scan preview, then draw my own boxes around the images -- because, as you stated, sometimes the software makes mistakes. It takes longer this way, but it's worth it. Besides, once you've set the size of an image area to be scanned, you can copy this size to the other images.

I've got a question about the epson scanner: on the v600 (and perhaps other models) 120 film scanning frame, there is an optional 'flattening sheet' that, as far as I can make out, goes over or below the frame being scanned, depending on direction of curl. Has anyone used this, and does it work?

Scanning area should for 135-film be 24x36mm. I can't remember the settings. I probably did something wrong. Scanning speed and batch work is essential to me as I don't have the patience to work my way frame by frame through a roll of film.

yeah the epson software in automatic mode is a bit hit or miss both in lining up the frames and 'exposure'. I've done both ways, and frame-by-frame generally (though not always) yields better results.

I have used it with particularly curly Velvia, which (in the roll I've scanned) can have enough curl to seem too small to rest on the little rails of the frame. My eventual technique was to put the flattening sheet in the middle of the strip of film, close the frame, and then slide the flattening sheet out of the way.

Ok, that makes sense, given the sheet is an opaque black plastic.

It is probably best to take this to the scanning section of the site as a new thread. This is worth working through and I believe we can help, though it may take several back-and-forth exchanges.
