Originally posted by tuco I'd rather carry around that combo than that 600mm I got. You get two focal lengths too. When I picked up my 300mm EDIF, I got 2X converter too. But typical Fleabay people just can't be honest. The converter had mold and it caused flare.
I don't see what the red filter did for you at the expense of the DOF you wanted on this scene. I usually place my middle gray up a stop more than metered with a red filter. Shadows end up much deeper (cuts the blue light out) and the dark green conifer trees can end up pretty black too (red darkens green). That's all good for a theatrical effect.
Yeah I only take out my 600/4 if I find a spot close to the car so I don't have to carry it very far. The 600/4 metal trunk adds a lot of weight, as well as all the tripod/support stuff. I also have a small cart I use for the lens trunk, but I have to go through some sand and that bogs everything down. The 135 format K1000/8 is twice as bad and a bit too long to get an entire freighter in the picture. The 6x7 400/4& TC is way more manageable with just a hard leather case with strap.
I've found a red filter is the best to battle haze in the summer months, when shooting over water, with mountains in the distance. I usually use an orange filter, other times of the year.
Because of the subject distance (2KM to 4KM) I gave up shooting colour film, as the haze is too hard to control.
