CZJ was the East German remnant of Zeiss after WWII. Some CZJ lenses are very very very good. Some aren't. Can you tell us what is inscribed on the lens? Pictures wouldn't hurt either.

Not sure if these pictures worked first time trying. Let me know if they didn't.

If you right-click and use "open in a new window" you can actually see the images. Below are a couple of them.

@Tom: Unfortunaltely you do not show what is (usually) the most interesting, namely the front without cap. It is here that you can actually see what kind of a lens it is. The cap in itself cannot be used for identification. (RioRico might be able to tell us at a glance what this is?).

yes, we need to see the front of the lens without the cap. thats the most important piece of information needed to identify and make any decisions on just what kind of lens you have quality wise.

The gold sticker shows it is a Japanese lens. Meaning it was made by sigma....
Make sure it was made in east Germany.

Steve
depends on your definition of 'true'. with that way of thinking, all the new Zeiss, 'Z' series SLR lenses aren't true zeiss either. for that matter, neither are any of the new Zeiss M series lenses or the contax/yashica zeiss lenses, or the kyocera contax G lenses. in fact by that definition, most of the zeiss lens people use today aren't 'true' zeiss lenses, as they are almost all made in Japan.

Now THAT may be a bit too much of a conclusion at this stage. You have a camera and a lens so, by all means try it out before you make your verdict.

I recently tested a Cosina 35mm f/2.8 against an SMC Pentax-K 35mm f/3.5 and boy, was I surprised........

Carl Zeiss Jena 28mm f/2.8 - EDIT/ADDITION to the above

Now, here is your image of the lens front (enhanced as good as I could in a hurry).

A Japanese made Carl Zeiss Jena 28mm f/2.8 certainly looks "respectable" or at least interesting in my eyes. Remember that great lenses were (also) made in Japan in the 1980'ies.

By all means: Give it a try!
