Buying New Old-Stock

What to look out for when buying new old stock cameras? Should it be CLAed right away?

If never opened and therefore the camera was still bagged, the desiccant packet would have kept the camera's foam from moisture. That mostly means the camera should be fine? The other thing I think would be the storage temperrture and the effects in extremes tot he oils and greases?

If it is indeed new, regardless of age, then surely it'll still be under warranty if being purchased from a dealer? If you're unhappy after purchase send it in to Pentax for remedial action under warranty.

I guess it depends on how “old” the camera is. Example if it’s a Spotmatic then it has been sitting in a box for 40 odd years and will still need a CLA from lack of use.

As for the warranty, if the item has been discontinued then Pentax is not going to be of any help. You can’t really expect today’s Pentax honoring a Spotmatic warranty for a 40 year old item. They would not have the parts.

I was looking at a NOS Pentax 67 200/4 lens at a local Pentax dealer in Vancouver. I asked about the warranty and he indicated the store would honor the warranty but Pentax would not as the lens was discontinued years ago.

Phil.

Well I a confession to make. The camera isn't a Pentax. However in my defense, I thought that for future searching sake, this is a good spot to ask this question. I think it applies to all cameras.

If the content doesn't fit this sub-forum, my apologies and feel free to move my post mods.

The camera is a Kiev 60. I believe it was a display model that was very briefly handled. Serial numbers on the lens and body indicate 1991. U.S. seller. Basically no signs of use. I know that Soviet cameras are know to be.... finicky... so I was wondering if extra care should be taken in this case.

Also, I hear many people talk about a CLA from Eric. How do I get in contact with him? Has anyone sent in a non-Pentax to get CLAed?

It is the first result if you Google "Eric" and "Pentax"- Home

I am not sure if he will work on non-Pentax bodies though. I tried to get him to do a Ricoh and he passed.

He probably doesn't have the experience to be certain he cuold give a satisfactory result, and almost certainly wouldn't have the parts. He's actually running low on certain NOS parts for Pentax K bodies. I asked whether he would swap out the focusing screen in my KX for the split-image one - an option at the time when they were new - but he had only one screen left. I passed simply because I don't feel like I should take the last one.

I own three FSU rangefinder cameras and several FSU lenses, but never had the courage to buy the medium format stuff. Given the general nature of FSU lubrication and the level of manufacturing that was common at that point in history, I would suggest finding somebody to give the camera a CLA. The Kiev 60 is supposed to be a decent camera if properly assembled. It is essentially a Pentacon Six in Ukrainian clothing. A simple Google search will give you a good starting place as you undertake your FSU adventure.

Edit: Found this real good link on how to tune your Kiev! http://kievaholic.com/kiev60kalibration.html

Steve

BTW...Post a photo of the camera when it arrives. I have always been fond of the appearance of that beast...

Fedka is an FSU camera specialist in USA. They stock and service Kiev 35mm cameras.
If Yuri doesn't service your Kiev medium format SLR perhaps he can recommend someone who will.
