How does this work, exactly, on the KX ?

The mirror up lever, and the preview button in combination, together control the mirror-up function on the KX.
The owners manual describes the sequence, but it confused me when I tried it on the camera. It is more complicated, as there are interlocks that apparently require a particular and different sequence ..... the state of the camera has to be wound, the lever turned, then the preview button raises the mirror manually, or so it seems, on the KX that I have. Any further insights or comments on this ?
Is my camera working as it should, this control ?

Mirror lockup does not require the camera to be wound. At least on my KX. You simply turn the lever and press the preview button. To unlock the mirror you turn the lever back.

At anytime, I simply turn the MLU lever from the 12 oclock to the 3 oclock position then press the preview button. Turn the lever back upright to restore the mirror.
