Testing a DA18-55 on a ZX7 film body

Hello,

Yes, we all know DA lenses are designed and optimized for crop sensors, not "full frame". We all know that using DA lenses in film bodies can cause vignetting blah, blah, blah....
BUT, what fun would it be without trying it?
This is about having fun. Not about controlled experiments in a lab.

So... I tested it:

Body: Pentax ZX-7
lens: DA18-55 AL II (from my K20D)
Film: Walgreens 200
Process: commercial C-41 (Walgreens)
Negatives scanned at home using an Epson 2400 and Vuescan

I noticed that at the long end of the zoom range (~55mm) the vignetting is not that horrible.

The panorama mode helps disguise it at medium range

But at 18mm the vignetting BITES hard

In summary: Yes, you can use it, but with limitations.
Conclusion: It was fun to try.

Thanks!

I tried it years ago. Around 26mm, it's usable.

I've used the DA 18-55 AL mounted on Pentax *ist. I'd say it's useable from 24mm with slight vignetting.

The first version of DA 18-55 AL seems to have a different image projection, it's not squared. All of the photos on the following link were taken at 18mm.

That's interesting - my 16-45 produces a round image at the wide end, limited by the film gate

That'
I'm pretty sure the square vignette is caused by the lens hood. I've tried the 18-55 WR and the vignette was round.

...I now have the urge to mount the 10-17mm on a ZX-L and see what happens. No lens hood.

The 10-17 has a sort of little lens hood. You will find people "shaving" their 10-17 to use it on 24x36. Especially the Tokina version on Canon 5D.

Hi friends: If anyone has tried this same experiment with the DA 16-45mm zoom lens, let me know. Thanks.

See above, I posted a sample at the wide end of the 16-45 Without the hood, it's good to about 22mm, give or take

This one I know is at 16mm
