k1000 wind lever...

Hello,

I have a k1000 and my rewind lever won't move. I just got this camera from a friend and not sure if its broken or if Im just not doing something right. It seems to be locked up. Any help would be great.

Do you mean wind or rewind lever? The wind lever moves the film out of the cassette in order to take pictures, and the rewind reels it back onto the cassette after the roll is finished.
If it's the rewind, you have to "unlock" the drive sprocket before the film will rewind. There's a rewind button on the bottom of the camera. Push it in and it will release the sprocket so it can turn backwards.

Its the advancement lever. I don't have film in it... Does it just need film? I just thought you should be able to pull the advancement lever without film in it.

Does the shutter trip if you press the release? If not, it is broken. The advance lever won't work if the shutter is already cocked.

If I click the shutter button it doesn't do anything. And the advancement lever won't move. But I also need a battery, does the shutter operate under a battery?

I asked if you had film in it as that could jam it. If it is empty, then you should be able to cock and fire easily. You don't need a battery. I don't believe any K1000s had shutter locks, but may the earliest ones did? (Spotmatic had them.) Anyway, if there is a little lever attached to the bottom of the shutter button (shutter lock), flip it. Otherwise, if that lever doesn't exist (most likely), it definitely sounds broken.

Sounds like its got the same problem my K1000 had when I got it. By your description it sounds like the mirror tensioning lever. This somehow gets out of position. Its very easy to fix. You have to take the base plate off (just three screws), locate the mirror tensioning lever and move up its slot. I can't find the link to the website I used but here's a link to another site which has good photos of the lever you need to move. You need to read posts 6 & 7 in the link.
