K1000 Surprise in The Prism

I acquired another Hong Kong K1000 today, in a Craigs List lot of darkroom equipment.
I wasn’t really interested in the camera but, once I arived home, I picked it up and put it to my eye.
What a shock I got when found this little alien creature staring back at me!
I took the prism out and tried to get a picture but it's something you just have to see in person.
It's really quite beautiful!

Incidentally....anyone have an extra prism kicking around?

It's just part of the foam disintegrating, I had a similar looking K1000SE. Eric can CLA it and remove the debris.

That's why you have to see it in person
This little guy lives inside the prism, like a 3 dimensional inclusion. Almost like a bug in amber.
What it really is, is a degradation or de lamination of the reflective resin at the top corner of the penta prism. Something like an old mirror that the silver backing has bubbled, presumably from moisture.
When I had the prism in my hand (I put the camera back together the way it was until I find a new prism), the inclusion looked like a crystal trapped in the middle of the glass.

Actually, the critter must have penetrated the outer black coating along the sharp ridge of the prism.

I'll check to see if I still have a spare K1000 prism... if I find it you can have it.

That's exactly where I saw the paint bubbling ever so slightly. After researching the phenomenon further, I have concluded that this is a common failing of the Hong Kong plastic top K1000. Also, I have read that there may be two different prism designs that do not interchange. I had considered picking up an ebay junker but thought better of it when I realized, this is a fine parts camera for my (24 year old one owner) K1000.
Now that I think about it again, I'd love to restore this one as I think it has far fewer releases then mine. A good prism and some new foam...this would be a fine K1000.

Thanks very much for the offer. If you do find one knocking around, I'll give it a home.

I'm glad to hear some info of the K1000 variants. At last count... six versions?

I'm digging through my piles of photo junk and let you know if it is the "new" or "old" version.

Give MysteryOnion a "like"!
I got a package today, containing the prism mentioned in post #4 and installed it forthwith!
Another K1000 saved from the shredder!

Hong Kong K1000 in great shape. Lens clear and fungus free. Slight yoda-ing on the prism.

You should certainly re-install if that was all that is wrong.
