Pentax MZ-50 (ZX-50) with SMC-M lenses

Hello,
I am new to this forum and I have a question. I am planning to get a Pentax MZ-50 (ZX-50), so the question is : Can I use it with old SMC-M and SMC-A lenses that I have?

Thank you in advance

Hello and welcome to the Pentax Forums, neighbor from the South.

I'm sure you can use it with SMC-A lenses, since I've bought a ZX-30, and the seller told me that it only works with lenses that have an "A" position on the aperture ring (or completely lack an aperture ring).
If you use it with a K or M lens, you'll only be able to use them at wide-open aperture. So very limited functionality here.

All pentax-K mount lenses should fit, the only difference is the amount of automatic functionality. Pentax-M are fully manual, no automatic focus, or aperture settings. The Pentax-A lenses have an automatic setting for Aperture, but no autofocus. I looked at the specs of the MX/ZX-50, and it mentioned that you will only get correct exposure with an apperture setting of "A", or lens wide open. My take on this would be that you most likely would not want to use lenses that do not have an "A" setting.

Of the ZX-series cameras, only the ZX-M, ZX-5, and Zx-5n have a mechanical aperture coupling.

ZX-L, ZX-10, and ZX-7 have it, too.

But the ZX(MZ)-30/50 do NOT, which means you cannot use K or M lenses with them (you lose most functionality)

What does that mean, exactly? I have a ZX-M, plus a 50mm SMC-M and 50mm SMC-A.

If you look on your older pentax K cameras ( K1000, M series etc), you'll notice on the right hand side of the mount there's a little spring loaded tab that allows the body to know what the aperature of the lens will be (1.4, 5.6 etc). Some of the later K mounts lack this tab, and thus the lens will only meter properly wide open on some bodies.
