I have been given a 1982 Contax RTS II Quartz and a Yashica FR1 set from a gent who contacted the Chairman of my Club and I was the first to reply -- there were several winders, 2 Contax flashes (the small one went bang ! ) leaving me with the huge hammer-head 540 ( not got it working yet) - all in a very dusty plastic box. I had to wipe everything down, all the Yashica lens cases I put on some Neatsfoot Oil, cleaned lenses with brush and microfibre cloth ( NO FUNGUS !) . Both cameras had been 'banged' -- Contax on a corner so the frame counter sticks on a number , Yashica on pentaprism and frame counter sticks on 'S' ( so I don't know how many frames I have taken) --- on use, both mirror bumper foams crumbled so I replaced them. I have done some tests -- the Contax 50mm f1.4 Planar is NO SHARPER than the 50mm f1.4 SMC Takumar on my 1970's Spotmatic F.

WOW! Score!
So the Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 is less sharp, has worse bokeh, and costs $350 more than a Tak 50/1.4? I'm not surprised

The only way I can believe this is if the Zeiss is a particularly bad sample. I have done side by sides of the Contax T* Zeiss (Leitaxed, 2 different lenses) and the SMC, S-M-C, and Super Takumar on my K-5, and the Zeiss is distinctively sharper wider open to about f4, and comparable in the rest of the range, and the bokeh is slightly smoother on the Zeiss with 9 blades as opposed to the SMC's 8 and the Super's 6. The T* coating essentially is SMC (Zeiss licensed the tech from Asahi), so no advantage there. What's more, and in IMO, the 1.7 Zeiss is an even better performer than either of the 1.4s.

Believe me, I'm as likely to pooh-pooh the supposed superiority of German lenses as they come (don't get me started on the Leica cargo cult), but in this case, the German lens is better. The margin might not be huge, but it is noticeable. $350 better? That's eminently debatable.

I think given the forum we are on, that there is a tendency to look at things through Pentax-colored glasses sometimes. I similarly don't get the love for the 8 element Super Tak 50, which is in no way appreciably better than a properly de-yellowed 7 element version, but which has the ridiculous "money losing super duper Planar killer design" myth constantly being attached to it as an excuse to drive up prices on the used market. Does anyone really think that a single additional piece of ground glass was the difference between a profit and loss for Asahi?

EDIT: Also, to be fair, the build quality of the knurled-grip Tak 50s is probably the best of any lens, ever. This post is meant solely to comment on the optical properties.

An 80-250mm f4.5 OPTOMAX Zoom on my 1960's Asahi Pentax SV -- not used much but it is amazingly sharp for an 'old Zoom' type, has tripod collar too !

A 300mm f5.6 TAMRON 'adaptall mount' fixed focal length on my 1960's Asahi Pentax SV -- fully useable at full aperture, it was also a 'Gift'

I have used my Adaptall-2 lenses on my M42 bodies and while they look a little out of place, I can't argue with the results!

Pentax SV (one of the best looking SLRs ever IMO) with pre-set Takumar 105/2.8

Another pre-set Takumar, 135/3.5

ME Super and MV1 twins with their 50/1.7s (the ME Super set cost 10 and the MV1 set 5, both absolute bargains considering the price of the 50/1.7 in the UK these days)

Ya, that kit is nearly as big as my 67
That was the price you paid to get 3.5 FPS with auto exposure in 1976.

Brilliant! I paid similar for my ME Super but with a 50/2.0 that is complete sh!te. Some say that lens is rubbish generally; some say it's reasonably good so mine must be a bad example, but either way I want to get a 1.7 and be done with the question.
