It was a joke about the "that's a nice looking camera" comment. Nothing serious meant by it.
Yes, but does it take good pictures?

Yep! The very first one built on 8 Sept. 1958. It's an early button-rewind, no-timer model, sporting Cameraleather.com Verdigris kidskin.

The lack of timer was the giveaway.

(Though it did take me a moment to remember whether it was the frame select lever or the timer that the early M3s were missing.)

The M3's also have bigger surrounds on the viewfinder windows. And M4's and later have the rewind crank.

Prettiest of all the Leica M's in my opinion. My M2 is a '65 version with lever rewind and self-timer - perhaps more functional, but no where near as clean and classy!

I took my 645 to Edinburgh last week but then had a nasty stomach bug for the entire time we were there so only got to take pictures of the camera instead of with it...

Here's my "new" e-bay MZ-3 with the AA battery grip and my FA 50/1.7. I'm very happy as MZ-3s usually sell for around ten times what I paid for this one. It was sold as faulty ("slow shutter" which doesn't really make sense on a camera with an electronic shutter) but seems to work perfectly. The flash spring is busted but I never use flash with film so I don't care.
