I have both the Pentax Spotmeter V and the Digital Spotmeter shown on the 7 of diamonds. And it is indeed a more compact one-degree spotmeter. But using it out in public these days I often wonder if some Karen will think it's a gun, call the police and I end up a news statistic.

I was thinking I remembered an early in-lens focusing motor (AF-I)... and I definitely remembered the stink around AF-S (I had a friend with a D40 about the time I got my K10) "What do you mean you can't autofocus with a 50mm lens?"

I also remember how proud Nikon was of AF-D in the early 90s... since it worked with "3D Matrix metering".

The Pentax rep took me aside at a photo show once and said "all the F lenses have done that since 1987..."

But I really liked the F801 when it was new. I remember it with the old 80-200 f2.8 AF. I think it came with an air tube that you'd yell in... "engine room, I need infinity focus!" then a cacophony of mechanical noises as it obtained the desired focus point. It was a good lens, but not very quick... I'll admit, though, I preferred the F601 for its form factor.

I've got a 6006 that I picked up for $15 with the AF-D 70-210. I bought it for the lens but the camera worked perfectly and it's a very nice camera. I had a beautiful condition F90s but recently dropped it and shattered the to housing near the prism. The camera still works fine otherwise... so I like that camera so much I bought another for $38 as is... it worked fine but it had a cracked top housing near the right strap lug. So... I bought another, this time a F90X with the data back for about $70 from Japan. It's in good condition but not as good as my original F90s.

Yeah I tend to use my Gossen light meter more than my Spotmeter these days, for that reason. Looks more like a Tricorder than a gun.

Do the F90s have a plastic or metal rear door latch?

All metal...unlike the N80 which you find allot on ebay with broken latches.

Btw...allot of the functionality in the N90s comes with the addition of the MF-26 data back. Things like advanced bracketing, interval timer, multiple exposures, custom imprinting, etc. The backs are often sticky due to degredation of the rubber coating which can be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol. The MB-10 grip adds vertical shutter release, and holds the 4 AA cells that were in the standard battery holder...it doesn't extend battery life...with or without the grip you're running on 4 AAs...although I think there's a battery insert for NiCds. I just put 4 Eneloops Pro AAs in and it lasts a long time.

Good to know. I keep my eye out for F90s and F80s but the former are usually much more expensive than the F801s. Occasionally I see and F80 at a decent price (what I'd be prepared to risk if the battery latch breaks quickly) but haven't bitten yet. I like the solidity of the F801.

I have seen a few F90’s for very low prices and have been tempted to get one. The most common problem is the outer covering turning to a sticky mess. I had one 20 years ago and it was a great camera. Very solid feel despite the plastic exterior.
