It took almost a month of discussion back and forth, plus a long wait for delivery ... but well worth it.

Happy belated b-day to me from me ... Purchased from the original owner ... very good shape and all present ... J (x-post)

In 1981, my father won this Minolta XG-M kit in a drawing at our local camera store. The employees were happy that a frequent customer who would appreciate the camera won it. They also were happy they didn't have to give the "learn to use your camera" lessons. Dad stumbled over this in a box last week and sent it off to me.

Forgive my ignorance. I see it is a lens, but what is special about it?

Angenieux is one of the old and reputable manufacturers of high-grade cinema lenses (along with Zeiss, Cooke and Fuji), this lens has a reputation for sharpness and especially for it's color rendering.
See for yourself:

Ah, oui ... This one is going into the personal collection (like there's another collection in the house). Going to break big time my rule that if one can "double their money, sell it and bank roll" again ... but, I break this rule a lot for the stuff in my "keepers" category, especially the better thrift store snags ... I have been hunting for one like this for some time. Happy camper, me ... Salut, J

PS - There is (was) a 70-210 at Tours, France, but without the box, etc. ... in Minolta. I was tempted, but the guy was a real a-hole over the telephone about answering questions, etc. I still have his contact info. And now there's new post - an Olympus with box ... must resist, must resist ... Zoom Ang

Well that alone makes it as special as France's gift to the US, Miss Liberty!

I know the feeling... just tell yourself that they're an emergency fund or a long-term investment.

Minolta, you say? Did he, by any chance, have no idea what it's worth?
