Well, a search for "bronica etrs view dim" turns up a lot of complaints. Compared to my squint-inducing Rolleicord it was great! Compared to my contemporary-period 35 mm cameras it was dark. It also looked about the same as a couple other ETRS bodies I tried out at camera meetups.

I talked the buyer off the ledge. He was trying to fire the shutter without film in the camera, in which case you need to engage the multiple exposure lever. I also explained that what he was seeing was dust on the mirror -- take off the lens and brush it off. I suppose i should have done that first.

Made another offer on the FED 2, and am pondering an Olympus 35 RC. A couple more little tiny rangefinders wouldn't hurt, would they?

Dim, difficult to focus screens were the dark secret of most 21/4 reflex cameras (double or single lens). I could never focus my Bronica S2 without popping open the magnifier in the standard hood.

Don't forget positioning your hand carefully so as to block as much sun falling onto the screen as possible. That's something I find that I always have to do when using a waist-level finder on sunny days.

I use the focus scale a LOT on my TLR and of course the scale focus folders. My Zenobia and both Yashica TLR have DOF scales for the different apertures. For larger apertures, accurate measure or estimation is needed, of course.

Agree.

I didn't think it was necessarily ugly, but thought it was one of the least attractive of the many FSUs.... and now (similarly) I find it one of the purdiest. The Kiev/Contax are growing on me... Certainly the gaudiest to m eye, but in a good way. I'm just not a fan of the giant selenium meter, and that's a problem because it means I might get another without it at some point! sigh...
Literally just finished pulling the Zorki's Jupiter-8 apart and well-cleaned/re-greased the focusing helical. Now it's like buttuh. Though in doing so noticed that mine has only 1 adjustment shim beteween the lens assembly and focusing... Not sure if that's correct. (The guide I found showed 2 total) The roll I got back did seem a bit off. I'll have to run another roll through and really pay attention. Nice to be able to focus it without pulling it off the mount now though.

I just had an epiphany (or brain-fart, what-have-ya) when, in my head, for just a moment, I wondered how I'd been able to focus looking around the room with the camera just now when I looked down and noticed the lenscap still on...
I suppose I should just keep the habit going, else I'll wind up blank shots and not even realize it.

I'm not a collector - tend to sell unused equipment - but I do admire some old designs. The Zorki 4 is attractive, but immediately I noted two minor details that could have improved practical ergonomics: 1) move the shutter release to the front; 2) reposition the PC socket to the opposite side of the accessory shoe.
The "remember to remove your lens cap" syndrome was one I used to argue with a room mate as a trivial SLR advantage (I had a Honeywell Pentax, my second Pentax body; he had a Leica M3). He managed to photograph the inside of the lens cap at several one-of photo ops. He also used to admire his f2 Summicron, cradling the body lovingly and letting the light shine down through the elements, and burned a hole through the focal plane shutter.

For me, it's that I forget to remove the filter from my folder. Shot through 2/3 of a roll of color film with a yellow filter on. :/

They really are... The engraving is far more attractive than the later printed lettering.

I'd very much consider swapping the 43 & 77 out for just my A-50/1.4 (along with the M20/4 shown here) for an even lighter and scrappier loadout that'd be mostly worry free. And, on the other hand, for a bit more versatility/weight, I'd add the MZ-3 as a 2nd body along for the ride.

My GSW690 has perhaps an unintended feature that prevents forgetting the lens cap. A criticism I've read of the GSW690 said the built-in lens hood gets in the way of putting on stepper rings because when the lens hood is stowed, you can't access the aperture ring and shutter speed ring.

There are two pros to the built-in lens hood and one con as I see it. First, you have a built-in lens hood. The second is you see the lens cap is on when you deploy the hood and I have yet to forget to take it off.

So you get two things for the price of one "bad" thing for only those too cheap to buy the needed filters for the camera's one-and-only lens. I'd take the two "pros" any day myself.
