Originally posted by stevebrot I am sort of the same way with my Bessa. Despite its obvious advantages over my other rangefinders, it sits on the shelf. Part of the problem is that the shutter release does not fall readily to my finger. The rest is that I am wary of drawing attention to my camera and the R3M does catch people's eye. It is time to get a soft release and Zhou case for better hand position and some camouflage to make the camera less flashy.

Honestly, I quite love the way it handles. The RF I enjoy a bit more is my old Kiev4a, for some ungodly reason. The Bessa, I think it's a damn near perfect camera, but I just don't reach for it - were I a rangefinder regular there's no way I'd part with it. But in practice, it's utilitarian and simple while being nice to look at - mechanical with just the meter as you know... But when I reach for a camera that fits that description I leave the house 9-times-out-of-10 carrying the MX. I fully appreciate the RF shooting experience but it doesn't gel with me - I think it's the mechanics of the whole thing. With the SLR, particularly the old mechanicals that have 1:1 or close to it, particularly with a fast-fifty, I am "in" the shot and the nature of focusing is actually PART of that shot... and if I'm shooting both-eyes-open I already have the advantage of seeing what's out-of-frame. With the RF the latter is obviously true, but the nature of focusing is more clinical and it *not* part of the shot, if that makes any sense at all. It's distracting to me, even if it is a fraction faster. Don't know how to describe it really. And of course there is the DOF issue which really doesn't bother me since I know the lenses at this point, so seeing DOF in the SLR is just gravy.
At the end of the day it just comes down to my damn bank account which is sorely hurting this year. Need to make a sacrifice and the Bessa, despite my enjoyment of it, needs to move to a new home whether I like to admit it or no.
Re: the soft shutter on the Bessa - I just bought a couple buttons and tried them on different cameras. I really did not like the feel of them when installed on the Bessa (same was true of the LX) - something to do with the rounded shutter button that already exists - the button just doesn't seat itself securely enough for my tastes and seems precarious. Opposite story on my MX bodies and the 67 as well as the Autocord - they're really secure there. But then, the shutter button feel and placement on the Bessa never bothered me so it wasn't really a loss.
