and now, some more Bessa-porn. This thing is just a sexy beast. I actually snapped this with quite a few to put it up for sale, and now, for now, I've literally changed my mind. hahaha
You ought to be shooting that... like everyday...

I know... But I just haven't. I've learned that while I do like them for some things (rangefinders), I'm first-&-foremost an SLR sort of guy.
I actually just bit the bullet and posted it for sale. Just isn't getting enough use.... and I'm poor these days. Heheh

I hear you there
I've been contemplating possibly selling a few of my cameras that don't see much use...
That Bessa is gorgeous though.

I hear you -- after finally picking up a Canonet, I've found that I like rangefinders in theory, but I'm just not in love with them in practice. Someone who will love & use it should have that beauty.

I am sort of the same way with my Bessa. Despite its obvious advantages over my other rangefinders, it sits on the shelf. Part of the problem is that the shutter release does not fall readily to my finger. The rest is that I am wary of drawing attention to my camera and the R3M does catch people's eye. It is time to get a soft release and Zhou case for better hand position and some camouflage to make the camera less flashy.

Honestly, I quite love the way it handles. The RF I enjoy a bit more is my old Kiev4a, for some ungodly reason. The Bessa, I think it's a damn near perfect camera, but I just don't reach for it - were I a rangefinder regular there's no way I'd part with it. But in practice, it's utilitarian and simple while being nice to look at - mechanical with just the meter as you know... But when I reach for a camera that fits that description I leave the house 9-times-out-of-10 carrying the MX. I fully appreciate the RF shooting experience but it doesn't gel with me - I think it's the mechanics of the whole thing. With the SLR, particularly the old mechanicals that have 1:1 or close to it, particularly with a fast-fifty, I am "in" the shot and the nature of focusing is actually PART of that shot... and if I'm shooting both-eyes-open I already have the advantage of seeing what's out-of-frame. With the RF the latter is obviously true, but the nature of focusing is more clinical and it *not* part of the shot, if that makes any sense at all. It's distracting to me, even if it is a fraction faster. Don't know how to describe it really. And of course there is the DOF issue which really doesn't bother me since I know the lenses at this point, so seeing DOF in the SLR is just gravy.

At the end of the day it just comes down to my damn bank account which is sorely hurting this year. Need to make a sacrifice and the Bessa, despite my enjoyment of it, needs to move to a new home whether I like to admit it or no.

Re: the soft shutter on the Bessa - I just bought a couple buttons and tried them on different cameras. I really did not like the feel of them when installed on the Bessa (same was true of the LX) - something to do with the rounded shutter button that already exists - the button just doesn't seat itself securely enough for my tastes and seems precarious. Opposite story on my MX bodies and the 67 as well as the Autocord - they're really secure there. But then, the shutter button feel and placement on the Bessa never bothered me so it wasn't really a loss.

Some literal gear porn.

The second curtain on my Pilot Super's been dragging, so I decided to take it apart and see what I could find — mainly 80 years of dirt and some very old grease. (Below is the "before" picture.)

A bit of lighter fluid to clean it up, and it seems to be much snappier. I still wouldn't trust it with slide film, but hopefully it's at least now consistent when the same speed is fired twice.

(This is a remarkably simple shutter. I wouldn't trust myself to disassemble and reassemble it, but I can easily understand how it works.)

If it helps any, my shooting style with the rangefinders is profoundly different than when I am carrying an SLR. My "seeing" and choice of subjects takes a strange turn, I fear. For example, here is a link to photos taken with or of my Kiev:

fotostevia on Flickr: Kiev 4A

Similarly, these with the FED-2 are even stranger. (Perhaps the Ferrania is to blame?)

I even shoot strange with the elegant Canon P:

As for the shutter release on the Bessa, I have long fingers and my index finger lands on the shutter dial instead. One would think I would have a similar issue with the Kiev 4A, but such is not the case.

I hope both you and the buyer do well on the sale of your Bessa.

Love those Fed shot quite a bit. Incidentally my Fed 2E is on the chopping block as well as of last night, along with the Zorki 4K and Kiev 4M.
I'm keeping a much older but lovely (but with significant shutter capping issues) Zorki 4, and my black Kiev 4A (sans selenium meter which I think makes it much less unwieldy in both appearance and handling). The Kievs are my favorite. The remaining Zorki is mostly just decorative. FSU RF PURGE! Hahah.
I figure, sometime down the line I'd like a genuine Contax and perhaps a Nikon S2 or thereabouts. May as well make room now. I'm less of a collector than a "rotator".

For those two:
1) Good luck finding a Contax in good working order, or getting one fixed if it isn't working.
2) Better plan on putting your soul up for bids on EBAY if you expect to afford a Nikon S2 in good condition

I scrolled by several Contax ll/lla/lll/llla over the weekend on Etsy (they're not my thing). I know where to get a Contax SLR repaired but a Contax rangefinder is well above my pay grade.

But the question is: does the shutter function properly? Neither the most reliable FP shutter, nor the easiest to repair.

"I know a guy" ... though for the foreseeable future, beyond mine as well. I simply have the "one day" hope - I just love them, but that doesn't mean I'll ever afford them.
