Met up with a friend today. I brought my 1955 Rolleiflex 2.8C, he brought his 1959 Leica M3.

Two of what are commonly thought to be the finest of their kind.

Does this count?

I spotted this at a market back in the spring. It's a shame they only had children's sizes, otherwise I would have bought one for myself, the design was very good.

Stuck indoors with a very bad stomach ache in January, I had the 645 with me for the trip to Edinburgh but didn't get to use it at all

Memories ... my father had one of those Rolleis (might not have been a C), his pride and joy. Unfortunately after he died my mother virtually gave it to one of those door-to-door "antique dealers", my father would have turned in his grave. I still have a couple of his books about it, and some accessories he made himself for it (he was an instrument maker).

He took wedding phots as a side line, and fancied himself as a freelancer too. In some formal motorcade soon after the war, Churchill was riding in an open limo. My father stepped out from the crowd with his Rollei for a photo; but Churchill cowed down, thinking it was an attack, Archduke Ferdinand style. I don't know if my father got the shot : One day I ought to search through his thousands of negs for it.

Very cool story! You should definitely try to find that negative...
Too bad you don't have the camera...

The Rollei 2.8C is a remarkably good camera. So is the D. Back in my previous life as a camera dealer, I bought a C and a D from a swap meet dealer for good prices and eventually resold them, but not before I used them a lot. One was a Planar and one was a Xenotar. I don't recall a significant difference between the two. Here's a self-portait of me and my cat Smokey. He was a good cat. I think it was the C, and I don't know if it was the Xenotar or the Planar, but man-o-man, do I wish nowadays that I would have kept that camera.

While Eric still has my Spotmatic F, I have decided to take my recently acquired Nikkormat for a walk.

At a local Starbucks, writing down some statements and ideas for my project.

FYI: Decades back I read that Rollei found that Americans preferred the Planar lens, so it was difficult to sell Rolleis with a Xenotar in the USA, but in Europe just the opposite, the Xenotar was heavily favored over the Planar.

I began my career as a camera dealer in 1989. By that time, yes, there was still a prejudice toward the Planar, but "those in the know" knew that the Schneider lenses were every bit as good, and in some cases better. For example, I've owned two mx/evs Rolleifliexes, one which had the 3.5 Xenar, and one had the 3.5 Tessar. The Rollei with the Xenar was the better picture taker by a slim margin.
