I don't think there ever was an M-Series 1:1.2 so the K-Series version continued to be sold through the M-Series time and of course they would have sold it in the then up-to-date silver boxes.

A nuisance with the 1:1.2 is its 52mm filter size while most of the smaller M-Series lenses standardised on 49mm; inevitable perhaps as the glass had to be bigger. Nice to see one on a K2 though; it was "meant" for the K2. The pair were the top-of-the-range kit option I believe, as shown in the K2 handbook and in advertising brochures.
Nuisance? Most of the K series lenses < long telephoto had 52mm filter threads - unless they were larger. The M’s were of course intentionally reduced in size to match the smaller M camera bodies.

Or just back to the size of the Takumar equivalents. It seems most of the Takumars (Super/S-M-C/SMC) < ~100mm have 49mm threads.

I was thinking the same. The cap that came with my M 50/1.7 (bought new in 1982) is the same style.

The M Series box was blue/red/green/white in colour, but I've never seen it used for lenses just camera bodies and accessories.

The M series lenses were in the same red/black/white boxes as the K Series.

The original M Series lens caps still should have "Asahi Pentax" on the cap. The latter M & A Series dropped the word "Asahi",

Of course if a lens was in production for a long period, the box changed as well to the latest version.

Phil.

The smc Pentax 50/1.2 production bridged the M-series time frame, so it is quite possible that caps and packaging might have changed during that time.

I am not sure, but I my recollection is that the my M 50/1.7 came in the silver box (late 1982). I may have still have it somewhere along with the box and manual for my Ricoh XR7 (purchased together).

Edit: The product code printed on the box and on the lens cap sticker is "20947" which is the catalog number for the "SMC" and "smc" 50/1.2. The catalog number for the Pentax-A 50/1.2 was "20987". I think that is pretty good evidence the packaging and cap are original.

My 'new' MX and K50/f1.2.

This is the first body I've had serviced by Eric. I actually took a punt on this one from a dubious classifieds add and had it posted directly to Eric's workshop. Worked out ok in the end and it's one of the nicest bodies I've used - one for the keepers

Sorry about the double subject matter, but after recently CLA both of these, I can't decide which one to keep. Strangely, these are the only Takumars I've ever owned in which the grease had dried out and gotten stiff. Possibly my all time favorite from Pentax is the Takumar 35mm 1:4. Colors unmatched. The one on the left is in mint condition without the box. I've been using the one on the right, which is in perfect shape.

Sometimes slower lenses can deliver unmatched performance. I'm reminded of the Leitz collapsible 50mm f/3.5 Elmar. An incredible lens.

Nice that you have a metal hood! So these early Takumars would have typically been paired with which Pentax model? I'm a little hazy on the early ones.

I recently got a 58mm f2 Takumar. Now I want to get all of those early ones... You really have to hold one to realize how well they are made. I think the one I have is better made than the FA 43...

1957, the same year as the release of this lens was the era of the "Asahi Pentax" camera. It was the first M42 screw mount camera, and why he term "Pentax screw mount" is still commonly used to describe M42.

1957, the year I bought my first Pentax (Asahi Pentax S with f2.2 preset Takumar). Neither the original Nikon F nor the original Canonflex had been released at the time. The Pentax was very popular, but in truth, it was the Nikon F that made a 35mm SLR the camera of choice for the rest of the century, displacing the post-war increasing popularity of a 35mm rangefinder (especially Leica M and Nikon S) and decreasing popularity of the 4X5 press camera (especially Graflex and Linhof). At the time, 4X5 was considered "standard" or "professional" and 35mm was still commonly called a "miniature camera." 21/4 square (Rollei et all, and the newcomer Hasselblad) were always a tag-along segment of the market.
