New addition and what a beast! Especially when compared to the LX, which was aimed at the same market (although a generation later).

I picked this one up locally just to see what the fuss is about. I'll run a few rolls through and see how it goes

Nikon F, Photomic T and Nikkor-S Auto 50/f1.4

I had the Nikon FTN with the 50/1.4 and a 105/2.5 that an aunt gave me. Also had the plain prism finder which I liked better. I should have kept it but I sold it when thinning out the collection. It is one of the great 35mm cameras.

I think I would prefer a plain prism but they are ridiculously expensive to pick up by themselves...

The old Photomic T was Nikon's first TTL finder for the F. No centerweighting. Very convoluted and idiosyncratic, you really gotta want to use that finder, cuz of all the strange hoops it makes you jump through. It's also just plain huge. But if you're into working with the early stuff, it can be kind of fun. I have an F with the plain Photomic finder -- the non-TTL model with the big round window in front. I bought mine just because I wanted to experience what it was like using this early form of tech. Since my finder works and is reasonably accurate, I've actually had fun with mine.

I was surprised by how much the Photomic finder throws out the balance of the camera, making it noticeably top-heavy. If it was a boat I'd say it wanted to capsize, if it hadn't already sunk due to being about as buoyant as a brick

I suspect a plain prism would feel much nicer in the hand.

My Nikkormat FTn (my only Nikon film camera) is heavy, but not top-heavy as it has a normal-looking prism finder.

That big, tall finder housing pictured earlier is distinctive, though. Cool as the fins on an early '60s Cadillac.

I have the S-C version of that lens, supposedly multicoated, mine has been AI'd long time ago and it's my standard 50mm with Nikons when I don't use the newer 58mm Nokton. It's a good lens, with a lot of barrel distortion but not as good as a SMC Takumar 1.4 IMO.

However, since I am at home I returned in contact with a lot of cameras I collected in the last five years, usually bought for peanuts...this one is the Canon T80, their first attempt to make an autofocus camera. despite of the rudimental tecnology it does work, and I bought the entire set (that consists in the 50mm f1.8, the 35-70mm and the 80-200 mm zooms). The T80 is an interesting camera and I took good pics with it, despite of having just programs...however I shot two rolls of Superia, I should have used it more.

It's not a feeling that the K1000 was a cheaper and simplified KM, its a fact. Pentax's intent with the K1000 was to offer the cheapest big-brand (Pentax was big in those days) SLR on the market. They had not long introduced the K Series when the fashion suddenly turned towards smaller cameras (led by the Olympus OM-1), so Pentax responded with the M Series.

But that left Pentax with the K series tooling and production lines. So they turned the KM production line to producing K1000s simply by omitting the self timer, depth of field preview and a few other minor features to cut cost. In fact the KM in turn had originated as the Spotmatic F with the screw mount replaced by a bayonet, so the K1000 was essentially a 1960's design. At the other end of the range the K2 was enhanced for the professional market as the K2DMD. Neither the entry or the professional ends of the market were so influenced by the fashion for smallness.

As for the M series lacking a base manual model, wasn't that the MX? I know you could get a motor drive and other professional accessories for the MX, but a bare new MX cost less than a K1000 in the UK in the 1980's I remember - IMHO Pentax were already exploiting the cult status of the K1000 and the fact that art schools recommended it to their students.

Today, K1000s sell for silly prices. I find it particularly galling when I see K2s and KXs being advertised on Ebay as "Like a K1000!", but cheaper as if they are second bests.

I bought my K1000 for £70 ....... and I'd say it's bang on close to mint.

I think I paid $230 for mine with two lenses, a bag, and a flash.

Of course, that was in 1982, and it was brand new...

I just bought a Mint cosmetic early serial MIJ for $55 during a camera store closing sale + Eric’s CLA = $130. It will outlast me. I now have four of the darned things.

I have stopped buying more since between the K1000, KX, and MX, I’m good until I’m in my 80s...

You suspect correctly. I also have just a plain prism for my old Photomic F and it makes a BIG difference in looks and feel.

New toys...

A friend of mine recently acquired a super nice Nikon F3HP kit and he wants me to try it out. I found a DW-4 finder for it on ebay for $24 shipped, so now I'm ready to shoot with it.

My film cameras

by Alex Ramos, on Flickr

(Yes, that is a Canon strap in the background. I saved that from a broken down T90 in the early 2000's.)
