Pentax ME I purchased on eBay for $62. The add said 50/1.7 with flash and case. I could see the lens in the pics were the 40/2.8 and I could tell the camera was jammed because the lens diaphragm was closed down in every pic. But I figured if I can get a 40/2.8 for $60 it was worth the risk. What came in the mail was a jammed ME and a 40/2.8 but no case or flash. Turns out the lens has a couple of spots if fungus...probably still useable though. I cleaned the ME, took off the bottom plate and got it unjammed. I put fresh batteries in and it's working perfectly. Also it clean up nicely...no dings, no major scratches and paint trim in good shape. So what I got for $60 was ok...but this seller is the worst. I gave him positive feedback but only 1 star for description, because I didn't want to deal with him and I was keeping the order.

Odd, I thought the 50/1.2 had one of the largest pieces of front glass.

Compared to what? Next to the other (slower) Pentax 50mm's, the front element is bigger. Next to a fast, short tele or any longer tele it's pretty small.

FWIW, the actual aperture diameter in the 85mm is wider than the 50mm.

Yeah, that makes sense, with aperture being a ratio. It's just that an 85mm doesn't seem that much longer than a 50mm, but it can have a significantly larger front element, even with a somewhat slower max aperture.

Though the DFA 50mm f1.4 and its monster front element is making fun of all of us...

Interesting how that design is so different from the classics...

Strangely, front element size is not always an indication of maximum aperture even for the same focal length/FOV. I have a number of 28mm lenses designed for the K-mount/M42 and 35mm film. Front element sizes range from about 48mm diameter on the large end (Kiron-made Vivitar 28/2.5) to about 22mm on the small end (Tamron 28/2.5 (02B)). Go figure...

Nice! I’ve used a CL as a travel camera since the late 1970s. Great meter, and nice light system for bicycle touring and hiking. The original 40mm Summicron and 90mm Elmar are also a sharp, light combination.
